Looking for a new Bosch blower motor with the squirrel cage fans for my '88 560SL.
Only seem to find Uro brand and dealers seem to just stock the entire assembly with case. Think i found the motor itself but not with the fans attached. Anyone know of a source for this set up made by Bosch (or MB OEM)?
Not that i know of but understand it's a bit of hit or miss on reusing the old ones. I know it can be done but much simpler job if you have a motor with fan cages already installed.
See that sort of stuff all the time. I always check the EPC and get the MB price before I do anything.
Also, take the part number you get looking up on the EPC for your car, then plug it in the search function on the EPC as look up on the part without car info. You get a list of models that the part was used on. Sometimes gives a cheaper resource if you have to go used/eBay. Sometimes seems with some sellers that if a part has R107 attached to it on eBay that automatically the part becomes "rare" and cranks the price up. Even though, same part might be used on 126 etc. and listed for a fraction of the money.
Best of luck on your quest for the blower assembly. If too crazy a money you sort of wonder if you can have your motor rebuilt and how much that would be?
well so far it looks like you get the entire housings with a MB brand for $1K-$1.2k (ouch) can file Bosch motor that look correct but without the fan cages attached. Or you can find the idea i;m looking for but the are URO brand. Does come with fans and motor and around $60 but understand motors are crap.
SO choices are I could buy the URO/Fan set up and a Bosch motor and try to make a good unit but hard to believe you can't get a Bosch motor with fans. Seem some close BMW ones but nothing for an R107.
Hate to drop $$$ on a new blower motor unit housing and all. So bump if any one as a source of Bosch motors/fans for 560L... Or maybe someone that rebulids these units.
Thanks Hillingdoner. Have been searching by part number and Bosch motors can be found but not with fans attached. Looks like the same motor was used in some BMW applications and found some of those with fan cages that look similar. Might have to get one to see.
At this point the old blower just chirps a bit on low speed so have time to look. May end up getting a Bosch motor and a the URO motor w/fans and find someone that can swap the fans. GlueckAuf wrote an excellent piece on how this is done so worst case may have to try it myself.
But bet there is an opportunity out there to offer this type of thing. Mercedes considers the entire blower assembly with plug one part so a dealer would not stock the motor/fans alone. And anyone with knowledge on this says URO motor are not very good but would be interested if anyone has installed one.
Does anyone know if the motor/fans changed between years? Would help expanded the search if they stayed the same.
Thanks..have already tried lubricating the motor but only helped for a short while if at all. If i end up having to remove/replace fans going to make sure i have a spare set as can be a bit of a hit or miss and are easy to break from what i understand. If the blower was non-functional it would be easier to justify the hassle but sure don't want to drop a grand to get rid of a chirp.
Too bad that in most cases the aftermarket parts are pretty marginal. One thing i am hopeful of is R107s will be bumping up on 50 years since first introduced and Mercedes Classic Center is just starting to support the series.
When you see a used motor and fans with $200+ asking price on eBay have to think they will see the market is there.
If the pin in your housing still exists the URO motor does not have the hole it goes into. You will have to measure where to drill the hole or cut the pin off.
Anyone ever used blower motor parts from the SL Shop? Or parts from them in general? I've heard of them from their restoration work so one would hope their spares are quality as well.
They show a motor/fan set up saying it's "high quality" which would rule out URO if they'er truthful and also show a replacement to the whole blower with case of their own design. And sell gaskets to keep it from leaking again.
Otherwise, I have not actually purchased from them, but I have talked to them via email a while back on something I needed and had a question about. Took them a day or so (even with time difference) to respond, but they were very helpful and professional. Ultimately, like I said, not purchased from them, but I still keep them in the "reserve" for suppliers I'd consider. Only issue is the ship cost and if worth the potential extra compared to domestic sourcing.
I'd give them an email or call and see if they will confirm if it is URO or not.
I'm wondering if it is because I have the Norton website extension turned on for the Firefox browser. Supposed to warn you on sites that may have issues. Never had that note pop up though. Was a full page instead of some small pop up window.
In my hunt for what should be a simple replacement part I've found that all sellers seem to be marketing the URO replacement. You can still get the Bosch motors without fans but only URO seems to be making them with the fan cages attached.
One seller on eBay that was listing "restored" blower assemblies said that they used URO motors but "modified" whatever that means. My guess is just drilling the hole to make them fit in the housing correctly.
Most egregious seller i found was eeuroparts.com and the "Genuine" brand who will market parts as "Genuine Mercedes" or "Genuine BMW" and even add a history of the manufacture to their Chinese made replacement part description.
Last year, I ordered the Bosch blower motor, intending to swap out the fan, and the URO motor with fan attached so I could compare. Tested the URO motor and it ran quiet and smooth, so I installed it and haven't had a problem. Returned the Bosch motor, and have been perfectly happy with the URO ever since. As good as the rebuild tutorial is, this is much simpler and only takes about 45 minutes including some deep cleaning inside the housing. You do need a good gasket though, and might need a new blower cover (I had replaced mine a couple of years back).
RaceDiagnostics. You have me wondering the reason for replacement of the controller. I just have a chirpy motor at this point but if there are advantages to a new controller (i.e. better speed control etc.) would appreciate the info.
My speed controller has never worked on the max setting so I had to do something, replacements are expensive but the electronic equivalent are very cheap and provide continuous control. I couldn't see any downside.
By choosing an overspec'ed model, it runs with only about a 10degree ambient temp increase so should be very reliable.
Thanks RaceDiagnostics. Did notice that SL Shop includes a controller in their blower motor package so assume you're not alone in having problems with it.
Ended up going with the blower motor unit replacement from the SL Shop. Have to assume that they use the URO motor/cage fan as that seems to be all that is out there but did create a very nice replica of the housing. Going for about $275 US so price was not bad.
The SL Shop obviously put a lot of work into the reproduction but fear that the URO guts (if that is what they used) let them down. Installed the blower is noticeably louder but not overly so but the air flow is quite let's say "unenthusiastic".
You can tell the difference in motor speed so quite sure when set on high it's given all it has so my guess is the cage fans used do not have the same blade angle or the like and just do not move the same amount of air.
Good news is that the original assembly is still mint and think I have the correct new Bosch motor. Have a lead someone that can do the rebuild (hopefully) but before I do this wondering if anyone has replaced their blower motor with the one offered by the SL Shop (or even the URO motor/fan replacement) and have seen the same marginal air flow problem?
I just replaced my blower and fans today with a Evans-Fischer assembly (pics in Glueckauf’s tutorial), which looks awfully similar to URO.
So far, it’s quiet and good airflow. Mind you, it’s only been installed for 6 hours.
