Low -mile 560SL '88 runs very well in warm weather, but as it has gotten colder, I noticed it "surges" or fails to smoothly accelerate during warm up. It starts and idles well bone-cold, but for a very brief period of 30 seconds to one minute, during the time when the dash gauge reads between around 60-70C, the car will "surge" upon acceleration, with what seems like a very regular rhythm of accel/decel - once warmed up, all is well. Noticed no such behavior in summer driving. Where to start looking?
It is around 65C that the warm-up regulator gives way to the electronic mixture control, I believe, and the O2 sensors take over now that they are hot. There is a relay involved, too, I think. At least, that is how it is in my 380SL. Others more knowledgeable than I regarding 560's will correct me, but that area is where I would begin my checks.
