I cannot get my lighter to work. I have checked the contacts and the fuse (by the passenger kick panel?) and is ok. am I missing something? Appreciate help...
Thanks,
JR
It is not a cigarette lighter it is a cigar lighter. The cigar lighter is larger in diameter. If you are getting power at the lighter point it is the element in the cigar lighter.
The lighter is powered by the brass contact strip and the metal spring pushing against it. I'd also suggest testing these points and cleaning them. Also, If the bulb is lit in the ashtray when the dash lights are on, its most likely just the element.
I had this anomaly with the cigar lighter and discovered an assembly mistake after some maintenance had been performed in the console area by a previous owner. On the 1973 (maybe other early 107s) the temperature vacuum switch had a 2 pole lead to activate the light in the knob - light came on when the AC compressor activated. An early design change by Mercedes-Benz made this lead obsolete; present but unused. This is documented in the service manual (83.1-542).
In my car, this 2 pole lead had been connected to the side of the ashtray in lieu of the correct 2 pole lead. The only way I found it was by checking the wire colors.
