The low beams on my 1987 560SL stopped working. When I switch to high beams, both the high beam and low beam headlights come on. But, when I switch the low beams, both turn off. Any ideas, please?
The bulb in the headlight (sealed low beam) is a two filament bulb. Have you tried replacing one (or both) of the headlights with a new one? It's an H5006 available about anywhere. Rare I think to have both sides go at the same time but possible.
One thing I have found with mine is the connector contacts get tarnished. Cleaning the pins and barrel contacts then applying a touch of silicon die-electric grease does wonders. The die-electric grease has conductive properties and helps prevent future tarnishing. I used what is called "Tune Up Grease" I got on Amazon.com. (Originally bought for use on my classic Chevrolets at tune up time.)
Its more likely that the headlamp contacts are dirty.
I had the same problem with a c270. The first thing was I noticed that the lights stayed on after I locked the doors. If I opened the driver's door and closed it, the lights went out. The next thing was the low beam on the driver's side went out. Changed the bulb and same problem. Checked the fuses and they were fine. Then the left low beam went out. The high beams still worked but eventually they stopped too. I thought it was the s.a.m / light switch / stalk. Turned out to be a short in the wiring plug for the headlight. A simple short can make it look like a catastrophic wiring problem that will cost thousands to fix.
