Hi
Just bought 1986 500sl with ECE and Engine number 117.964 5.0L with 265hp with ECE.Never see or hear about ECE on 5.0 L engine.Anybody hear a out this option on euro 5.0 L engine?I know some 5.6L have this option,but 5.0L?
Don't know the abbreviation, but was (is) a high performance version of selected engines in late 80'ies. Factory option with higher compression, different exhaust etc. Mostly used in the w116 chassis, I think. Others might know more details, I'm sure.
Never seen anything that stated they had higher compression or horsepower. From what I read it was used to alter performance on the KE Jet for. Google EZL ECE.
Not sure if it is true but i was told a long time ago that it is used to change the advance curve in the ezl because of different fuel octanes availible
I have no idea what ECE stands for, but I agree it is limited to euro models that I believe often have more advance, and they are more likely to have to be dialed back when crappy gas is used than North American models.
Notice that there are some early euro 560 engines with ECE and they produce notably more power than the US 560 engines, and more power than the euro 500 motors, as you'd expect. Right? If a euro 560 has more than 10% more displacement than a 500, it seems to only make sense that a euro 560 would have at least 25+ more horsepower than a 500. It seems it does a little better than that though. So there's some mystique to these ECE cars for their power.
I guess it's nice that they make good power in a compact SOHC engine... But once you see MB was pumping far more power out of the DOHC M119 5.0 engines, it all seems moot. Too bad there are so few people that have stuffed them in the 107 chassis.
The "ECE" option code 822 was a 1986-87 only option on w126's during the times all M117 engines were 9:1 CR. The 822 ECE was a 5.6L modified to 10:1 CR, warmed cams, aggressive ignition mapping, tri-y exhaust, etc. there were no 822 codes for any engines other than the 5.6 liter, and even that engine wasn't available in Europe back in the day.
A factory euro 300hp 10:1CR 560SL R107 with 822 motor would have been quite something else.
The 5.0 motor in '86 if optioned as such received similar tri-y exhaust manifolds, KE-Jetronic injection, used stock cams similar to the 420 M116's, and the same 240hp rating as the '80-85 pre-KE.
In German: "Aber auch ohne Katalysator erfüllte diese sogenannte "ECE-Version" die von der Europäischen Wirtschaftskommission ECE festgelegten Abgasgrenzwerte.."
Bascially, the ECE (ECE Version) is a version that fulfills the emission requirements of the EU (European commission) WITHOUT having a catalytic converter.
Hi
So did that car have more horse power with ECE or just like regular 500sl?
I find other weird part under ECE knob.What is that for? Got small turntable knob and on the top of that box is number 1,2,3..Have one vacuum line going in and some wires with conector.
EZL ECE is correcting resistor for the EZL.
S = 95 RON (93 AKI), non-leaded (but you can use 98).
2 = poor quality 95 RON, non-leaded.
N = 92 RON (87 AKI), non-leaded.
3 = poor quality 92 RON, non-leaded.
The best combination is "S" + "Prremium" fuel.
ECE is correcting resistor for the KE. It must be in position "1" and should be sealed.
Hi everyone!!!
I bought other 1986 500sl with ECE!!! Exactly same colors interior and exterior .I find something in the trunk above antena and I never see that on any r107.I check my 1986 560 sl and nothing like that.Its a white plastics container with some wires and conector.Nothing inside.Bracket for that container and everything around looks original .What is it?
Towing sensor. Part of the alarm system. My '86 560SL has it.
