We need a good process to deal with broken Rear View Mirrors.
I note that many R107's have loose Rear View Mirrors - including on
my 560SL. I suspicion that there is a broken plastic friction piece
inside the mirror.
I know the mirror from the Mercedes sedans of the 1980's era
will work but they are larger and not a great substitution.
Has anyone figured out a way to take the R107 Rear View Mirror apart
and repair it?
Which rear view mirror. The center one was still available from MB and real cheap like $29.00 last time I bought it. The outside electric mirror just prys apart using plastic wedges and there is a replaceable motor inside.
OK. I'm pondering on using a dremel tool to cut open the black plastic
surround, fix the friction mechanism, glue back together, sand and fill
with a plastic filler, and touch up paint.
That's a lot of trouble Carl, The used one I got out of a sedan fitted right in and I couldn't pick the difference. Trouble is I don't remember which model MB it was!

Graeme, I pulled one off a 1980-ish Mercedes sedan and used it for a while.
The sedan mirror I used was wider and did obscure some of the view.
Was the sedan mirror you found the same size as the original 107 mirror?
That was actually about 5 years ago. At the time there were several used ones selling on E-bay for more than the coast of the new one from MB. Sorry to here they are NLA.
I just did a repair on my 85' 300TD. The plastic was all broken up, seeing that the car was from TX. Got one with no glass from a parts car, but the plastic was good. I was able to warm the plastic up with a heat gun and install the mirror from my old one. My guess is the screw is loose behind the mirror glass if its like the ones in the 300's. Might be able to just park it in the sun to warm up the plastic and get the glass out.
