Hi. I have a 1983 380 sl with an automatic. Small bumper car. no emisssions.
Has anyone done a ratio change or swap on one of these? Can a rear from another MB work in this car. I would like to take the ratio up to a 3~3.25 ratio. Give it a little more omph out of the box.
If you want a higher ratio, easiest is to swap whole diff. But, as Pete said, try starting in first gear, before you go to that extreme. Being a Euro it shouldn't be too much of a slug. The earlier 380SL's (Euro, not US) had a 1:3.27, but I'm guessing yours is after VIN 009132 when it changed to 1:2.47
Thanks for all the help. I definitaly start in first. I count 3 shifts every time. Anyhow vin is WDB10704512024116 so I guess I have a 1:2.47 ratio. What years would have the 3.27 ratio? Are they a limited slip rear?
Thanks again for your help!
Safer to go by the VIN than the year. The VIN doesn't lie, but people get the year wrong. They would be LSD if the original owner ticked that option box when ordering the car. otherwise, no.
