Gas Tank Cleaning...
I've been reading suggestions about the best ways to clean..and seal ??..my 450 tank. Larry is rebuilding the Fuel Dist...so I'm wanting to do this right. The strainer and sender both came out easily..The strainer was not clogged badly..and there was a little rust/varnish ??? around the openings when I ran my finger around on the inside. Larry said he uses Hydrochloric acid in his rebuilds..and says the tanks are galvanized. Is there a final word on this subject ? I'm afraid of a lining material breaking loose..and starting the problem all over again..Suggestions ?...thanks..

Rust in the fuel distributor probably did not migrate from the tank. It more than likely came from the fuel lines or fuel distributor itself.
Flush out fuel lines. Install a new strainer in the tank and a new fuel filter. Replace all fuel lines on the fuel pump cluster. You may also want to check the pump.

The car started and ran..for a while. It has not been driven in 3-4 years. The fuel distributor is being rebuilt. I have a new strainer and filter..and the short lines. The tank has been pressure washed..I have had suggestions from lini ng..which I think is inviting trouble..to Hydrochloric acid..that's what Larry at CIS uses on the FD rebuilds..to..vinegar..to nuts and bolts rattling around in the back of a truck..I think..I'll just use all new parts..run it a while and change the filter..The lining material..regardless of the brand..scares me..Has MB ever put out a memo on this problem ?..PS..I'm WAY far away from RENU...

I'm familiar with POR..I've heard good and bad...A friend with a Sunbeam Tiger used Bill Hirsch's brand ...probably the same stuff. He says it's OK..but has found it in his filters..

The tank is at a radiator shop now..getting high pressure cleaning inside. He will line the tank..if I want it. I've just not heard of good results..over the long run..with POR or any of the other brands...

Here's a new one. A hot rod friend in Florida said to get a couple bottles of.."The Works"...toilet bowl cleaner. Pour it in..slosh it around..rinse and dry !!
Depending on how serious you are, you could take the tank to a plating shop and have the tank nickel plated. Nickel plate will not flake off or rust ever again. Also depends on how bad the tank is now. If bad enough, it won't be platable.
