'83 280SL 5 Speed

Gents and Ladies,

I've been asked to help a local gentleman sell his 1983 280SL. He will be celebrating his 80th birthday soon and has decided that's a good time to let his toy go.

I took a look at the car today and shot a few pics. It is a 5-speed with 92K miles. The owner purchased the car in 1996 with 69,300 miles. The owner claims there is no rust, and I observed no rust during my brief inspection. The owner says the car does drop a little oil but otherwise no outstanding mechanical issues. The car was imported in Dec. 1983 and the federalization papers are with the car.

Exterior - body is straight and without damage other than a couple of door dings. The car was repainted with original color in '97. While the paint is okay, it was not a first quality job. A pro detailer could likely make the paint acceptable.

Interior -little tired. The MB Tex need a serious cleaning and the drivers seat bolster requires repair. The carpets should be replaced as well as the center console wood. The good news is the dash is perfect with no sign of any cracks.

Other - Car fitted with euro bumpers, although the rear bumper is damaged. Both tops with the soft top said to be in good condition. Air has been converted to R134 but has not been used recently. Car always garaged by the current owner. Trunk was remarkably clean and the spare tire never used and appears to be original. Tools and safety flags remain with the car.

While there is work needed, this car has a lot good going for it. The owner is asking $18K, which I believe to be high. Your input on appropriate pricing would be much appreciated. A few pics are posted here. If anyone may be seriously interested in this car, please PM me. I'll provide more pics and contact information for the owner.

Cheers,

Neat car, it definitely is a desirable niche type car. Bless your friends heart for coming to this fork in the road. If there is indeed zero rust, it does have value. I'd think the way high side would be $ 10k. If the int, top and paint were flawless maybe 18 k very tops to the right guy ! Good luck. I think Rowdie has all the 280's he has room for though

No argument there.

I hope to give this nice gentleman some reality, but I'm out of my league on this car.

Cheers,

Interestingly...the spare is a steel wheel.

My unused, never used, spare is a nice shiny Bundt with a brand new (30 year old) Pirelli.

It is a better deal than the guy near me that thought he could get $15k for his black on black one with lots of rust and torn interior.

Who are we to crush a dream?

I'm all for higher priced 107s...we will all profit from that eventually.

Mine is probably $3k overpriced considering the current market.

Maybe someone will come along....maybe not. If so...yay for me.

If not and I keep The PIG....yay for me again.

I wouldn't mind a manual. That engine looks similar to the one in my 75 280C (long gone as cancer took it). If my 560 had an option for manual, I'd change it. All of my vehicles have been manuals, except for the MBs I've owned. 18k is quite high, but to import and legalize a foreign vehicle costs $$$$. So far it looks good in the pics, but for a clean 107, I would say between 12-15K is the ballpark for this vehicle.
