Please allow me to take a moment to be a proud father.
My daughter Susan, who serves aboard the USS Benfold, (DDG65) emailed me this afternoon to let me know she passed her board and is now
EM3(S/W) Goshorn. (Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist)
Susan has been in the Navy since January 2010 and this is her first deployment. She was top grad in her A- school and made E4 after only being in a year and two weeks. She told me recently that she will probably make E5 by the end of the year.
USS Benfold has been at sea for about 6 weeks of an 8 months deployment and is on the way to the Middle East.

I remember the day I enlisted back in the 60's. You have to love and respect these brave, young folks who keep stepping up. God bless her and all the others who do what they do everyday. Thanks for your service!

All I can say is:

"AMEN, AND PASS THE AMMUNITION!!!!"

She is a very pretty young girl, and I am certain that she could have done anything she wanted to do as a career, but to volunteer to protect and defend this Great Nation is a very special thing.

We just got our Son home from Iraq the first of this year. He was with the Striker Brigade out of Ft. Louis in Washington State. They were the first ones to step foot on Iraqi soil during the first Gulf War, and therefore they were the last ones to leave.

I will pray that she comes home safe to you.

Tell her I said to:

1) Think Smart

2) Keep her head down

3) Fight hard if she has to!!

I have no idea how she got that costume. I don't know if she ordered it and had it shipped or if she made it. I suspect she had to make it since getting something delivered to the ship can't be easy. I haven't been able to get a hold of her for several weeks.

dgosh ,
We all respect and appreciate your passion about the SLC . But your daughter's success puts everything in perspective . A cruise is a full time job . I give her a tremendous amount of credit for her personal drive and her service to America. GOD SPEED and may she be safe. I served proudly in the mid 70's fighting Tooth Decay in the USNR . Mayport. Florida.

Thank you so much for your service. I am very proud of her. I wish I felt that her civilian leadership would do everything possible to ensure she returns home safely, but recent events in Libya show us that political careers are much more important than the lives of those serving us abroad. Sadly, most Americans couldn't care less.

I wished I had served....not really a top patriotic thought of a young Canadian middle class boy in the 70s.

It might have kept me out of a little trouble in my 20s....on the other hand...maybe I wouldn't be who I am today, wouldn't have met my wife and had the kids I have,

Everything happens for a reason, I guess.

And my 3 daughters have shown no interest. They are all girly girls.

So I will watch others, like your daughter, Dan and be proud for you.

After several weeks of not hearing from my daughter I received an email from her today to asking for my advice on buying a house here in Houston,as an investment for when she gets out of the Navy. It seems she forgot to mention something else in her email. I just happen to see the following message from her Captain on the ship's Facebook page. It appears my girl got her promotion to E5, and did it in 34 months. Seems like that could have made the email.

OK, so once again BENFOLD rocks it and shows that it pays to be a winner. I have the most awesome crew in the Navy which is why BENFOLD is the BEST SHIP IN THE NAVY! Today I received the advancement results and BENFOLD crushed it. With a 47% advancement rate, BENFOLD was 43% ABOVE the Navy advancement Average! Folks, this is huge. TEAM BENFOLD WINS. PERIOD. What follows is the list of personnel who advanced: FC1 Abbey, GM2 Banks, OS3 Barnett, QM2 Besinaiz, GSM2 Buhain, QM2 Bussa, OS1 Calloway, FC1 Chatmon, EM3 Chavezsalazar, OS3 Claypool, GM2 Coin, EM3 Cox, FC2 Curfew, STG3 Curtis, EN2 Enright, OS3 Eyzaguirre, QM1 Farrell, GM2 Freirmuth, IC2 Goad, EM2 Goshorn, OS3 Gray, CTT2 Green, CTT3 harvey, GSM3 Ho, OS3 Kroll, FC2 Lagenor, CTT2 Lane, FC2 Larson, GSE3 Lawson, DC2 McFarland, GSM3 McGurren, LS1 MejiaGuillow, GSM3 Mendoza, FC1 Mizner, GM3 Neissen, IT2 Norris, HT2 Paniagua, IT1 Pena, DC2 Rice, DC3 Rodney, STG1 Saine, EN3 Salazar, EM2 Shaw, SH3 Stamaris, FC2 Stamp, FC2 Stewart, LS2 Valder, DC1 Valle, FC2 White, and OS3 Williams! Congratulations to the bunch! TEAM BENFOLD makes me one proud Captain!

This thread is a little out of date so I figured I would post a short update. EM2 Goshorn SW became EM2 Pavao SW in early February 2014 . She married a wonderful Petty Officer First Class named Brian and they just had a beautiful baby boy on March 8, 2015. While on maternity leave Susan found out she made First Class. Her pinning ceremony is tomorrow. As you can imagine I couldn't be prouder of her and my son in law. Brian left the Navy last year so that Susan could accept a shore duty assignment in New Hampshire, close to his family in Massachusetts, and so that they wouldn't be deployed at different times.

I thank her for her service to this great nation.
E5 is a big accomplishment in every service- this means she is become more responsible and less expendable.
CONGRATS !

Thank you for your service as well. Most people have no idea how Y'all sacrifice for us.
I need to check, but I may have typed the wrong informstion previously. My daughter just made E6. She made E5, 2nd Class, in 34 months and E6, 1st Class, in just over 5 years. Actually, her pinning ceremony was yesterday. She was notified of the promotion about a month ago I think. Hopefully, she will stay in and make Chief, but I know it is easier to wish for something if you are not the one that has to do the work it takes to achieve the goal. Either way I am incredibly proud of her and my son in law, who made E6 before he got out. They are both wonderful people.
