Great advice. The picture of the cracked subframe is from a 1981 280SL (euro) and if I remember correctly the one with the total failure is a 380SL.

Since ALL cars today have the "euro" look lights, I much prefer the old round units. Same with the bumpers. The car is a bute, so the bigger bumpers fit it's personality...

^^ So, another way of putting it, is you like the way the US Government redesigned it

I hate the looks of it , but it is suited to the use we are putting ours to ( grocery and kid-getter). Actually, the US DOT lights don't look so bad, but probably aren't as effective as the euros.

I understand why they added the bigger bumpers (albeit very ugly), but what was the reasoning behind the US Gov't changing the lights?

MB and or Bosch elected to forgo the required US-DOT approval of the equipment, assuming it could have met the standards in place at the time.
