Enclosing Rear Speaker Enclosures

When I upgraded my sound system I went very basic on adding rear speakers. They sound great but won't get many points in the "looks" department so I decided to enclose them.

Two pieces of MDF sheeting and a bit of cutting here is a very rough mock-up of the enclosure keeping the original speaker boxes.

I am planning on covering the MDF with vinyl fabric. Probably gray on the top and black around the speakers. Will add a pic when completed. Now it's off to the fabric store (talk about feeling like a fish out of water).

That looks pretty good. Did you make a port in the box for better bass response? I have the setup you originally had with the speakers in seperate boxes from the previous owner. I would like to relocate them to behind the rear seat if possible. The two boxes just about take up all of the space that is back there now. Let us know how it turns out.

Bass is non-directional so the porting could be on the sides of the speaker box. Or the top for that matter. That's why a subwoofer can be placed anywhere in a home theater setup. May play around with it a bit. There's only so much you can do with a sound system in an open car.

REAR SPEAKERS PHOTOS

HI Guys and girls as requested I have supplied photos of my rear speaker installation being 6 inch ( not 7 inch ) JVC 150 watt rear speakers .

Photos show the cut out hole and speaker installed .

Its the best way to go to preserve the valuable rear space for luggage parcels etc. with no sound issues .

best way to set up rear speakers

Rowdie , yes I agree its all a personal choice and thats what makes the world go round , I have mods in my car that would not be carried out by many people , but for me yes.

However in regard to rear speakers its the only way for me as I dont want to lose the great space provided in this model, as when I travel on extended trips I carry a golf bag and two suitcases . I am a golf tragic .

I dont need the finest sound system known to mankind , just a good system, and lots of room in my r107.

Project completed. Like the results but not %100. Came out too "boxey" looking but will be OK for now. Would like to somehow mold the ends to fit in the curves of the car but that may be a bit above my skills as a woodworker. May give it a try...happy with the way the vinyl came out but developed a new respect for those who do it for a living.

I think it looks nice. My speakers are installed right now like yours were originally - in angled enclosures that do allow the high end to be heard in front.

I like the look of nobby's pic below (post 13 at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/1582986-invisible-speakers-2.html). Think I'll eventually finish mine similarly.

A prior owner had cut out holes in the shelf for 6x9's, and installed some decent speakers - Alpine Type R, if I recall. However, there wasn't enough space under the shelf to take advantage of the bass; and they faced straight up, so one got no high end from them in front. When I added new 6x9's I went to Hertz Energy 6x9 triax, and cut out holes on the bottom of the angled enclosures and matched them to the existing cutouts, to maximize the airspace and bass response. The angled enclosures do get the high end response to the front, and bass is significantly better.

I don't have a lot of power - only 45 watts RMS per channel. But the Hertz speakers in back together with the small Alpines in front sound pretty good. Now I need to make it look better. Like nobby's photo.

Luggage speaker has one Neutrik XLR-style connectror and the left rear seat safety belt holds the speaker behind driver seat - so I will get the best vibs.

I just unplug and lift the suitcase into trunk when the rear seat is needed. I should have second XLR connector in the trunk...

500sl the best

NGArover,

your experience with a speed burst in your 560SL :thumbsup:is great but you get a better speed burst out of a 500sl , it is the fastest of all the 107s.

When mercedes loaded down the 500sl with pollution gear for the US market it did not run well so they increased capacity to 560 , however the 560 still will not out run a 500SL .

My 500SL has not center muffler and cat convertor and does 0 to 60 in under 7 seconds .however I agree your 560 will give you a buzz compared to the TD.

Thanks Skylaw. I've yet to see a setup (including mine) that knocks my socks off. They all look "added". Guess that's the challenge of adding something that looks stock to something that was never there in the first place. Maybe a few more beers will help...lol. I'm running a trunk mounted amp with 60 watts per channel for just the rear speakers. It's loud enough. Damn I must be getting old...never thought I'd say that.

I moved my amp out of the trunk because it would overheat and trip on stinkin hot days.

I haven't had any problems since I moved it "under" the parcel shelf.

My rear speakers are also cut into the side panels by the PO which, since the SL has the back seats option installed, was the best alternative I guess. The panels are cracked and I intend to try and fix them by using fiberglass and trying to better anchor the speakers into the holes.

I too am looking for a set of spare panels
