Question 380 sl fuel pump noise

My 380 sl fuel pump is makes a humming sound that can be herad when idling. I have looked on Ebay for pumps, and they run a lot of different prices.
Has any one had experiance with the after market fuel pumps?

When new, should the pump be completely silent? Ours hums a wee bit. Can't hear it in the car, but from behind just a faint whirr. I have never heard another one, so I can't judge how good or bad ours is.

A faint whirr or hum is common. A loud crackling is air getting into it causing cavitation. This happened on my 380SL when we first energized a new pump the other day. The idle stumbled until the system was pressurized and the air finally purged.

Absent the crackling, a loud humming or buzzing may indicate it is working extra hard. This might be true if your breather system is clogged. Check the inline vent from the expansion tank to the charcoal cannister, by disconnecting the vent line (not the one going to the engine) from the cannister and blowing into it. There should be minimal resistance. Another check is to remove the gas cap. Air should rush OUT. If it rushes IN your breather is clogged.

The harder the pump works the more current it draws through the relay. There is a limit there. I guess the relay (fuse?) will go before the pump burns itself out or the tank collapses from the partial vacuum.

How long have you owned your '85? That is, do you know how old the pump and filter are? Filters are cheap. Buy a Bosch pump and filter and replace them both.

Mine sat for almost 6 years with half a tank in it. Three years ago I replaced them both when getting the car back on the road. A lot of crud must've passed through my system in that time so I recently replaced them again just for peace of mind. In a few weeks I'll be taking an all-day drive with my ever-lovin' up to central Florida so it is essential that there be no failure back there for obvious reasons!

I have had the car for 2 months, I replaced the filters, and fluids after getting it home. I checked the replaced fuel filter, and found very little trash in it when I drained it. The car had no maintaince records, but the belts, and main hoses had beed replaced, before the car was parked. I have restored old car for years, and this was one of the best condition for a parked cars I have seen. I will check the vent, but my sound is a steady humming.
thanks for the tips.

Usually they are cheaper but AutohausAZ has the Bosch 69609 for $148 with free shipping.
