Why Can't I Convert a 560sl to 5sp Manual?

Hi Everyone
I have been lurking here for some time. Getting close to my purchase. I am interested in buying a 560sl. I found an '87 with under 90K miles that looks like THE ONE, but.....All of them were made as automatic trans as far as I can tell. Why can't I put a 5sp manual trans from, say, a 190e of early '90s vintage into an '87-'89 560sl? Has anyone done it? Can it be done?

Just askin....

Anything can be done, it's a matter of resources. Do a search here, I believe there have been threads where it's been discussed, and in process.

Custom fabrication required - and a tranny from a 190E would shatter - can't handle the power.

Otherwise - search on this board.

Personally, I'd spend the money on tuning the engine and existing drive train instead of going manual. You can get as much - or more - power out of a 560 engine as the most powerful of the current AMG models produce.

How do you get 500+ hp out of an old 560?

Recipe: take one reasonably fresh 560 engine, add custom fuel supply, new engine management (e.g. Autronic SM4), custom headers & add twin turbos, custom freeflow exhaust, top it off with the right engine control maps and there you go.

Depending on boost, this will get you up to the 1,000 crank horse level - at 1bar it produces wheel spin in 4th gear at will at 70mph.

Stepping it down to around .4 - .5 bar makes for a more drivable vehicle.

Clearly not a bolt-on fix for a tired 100K mile motor.

Well, less involved than fitting a manual transmission in there - and certainly more giddyup and go.

I own a 1988 560SL Roaster and I beleive my engine may have been overhauled. In other words I don't have the same speed. How can you tell if someone has converted your 560SL V8 Roaster engine. Since repairs it does not drive the same. What kind of test can I do to assure I have the same horsepower according to the specs in my manual.
