Stiff brake and steering column rattle in my 79' 450 sl

Trying to get this car up to good running order`Anyone got any ideas why my brake pedal is so stiff? I push down on it and its real hard, especially when the car is just warming up. After its been running awhile it gets a little easier to push but still not normal. It seems at stoplights that the car wants to push through the brakes and start moving. From everything I've read here and elsewhere it points to the brake power booster. Or possibly the brake vacuum line leaking. How can I be sure before I spend the $100 - $200 to replace? Next issue... The car steers fine but when hitting bumps in the road the whole steering column rattles like there's a bad bushing or bearing in the column. Any ideas? I've got several manuals here but nothing to elaborate as far as troubleshooting. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The rattle could be the steering coupler. Lots of posts here.

Steering is probably the steering coupler which attaches the steering shaft to the box.
Brakes could be either the booster, vacuum hose or check valve in the hose. Loosing pressure when stopped allowing it to moved could be baster cylinder or wheel cylinder, or hose. How is your fluid level.

Fluid level is where it's supposed to be. If it was the vacuum hose leaking, would I not notice it sucking air into the system through the brake pedal? Is there any testing (troubleshooting) I can do to make sure what exactly it is? For my own piece of mind, why would I not just replace the hose, the booster and possibly the check valve anyway, if there are no tests or troubleshooting that could be done to narrow it down?

You can pull a vacuum on the line with a hand pump and gauge, like a MityVac. If it fails to hold vacuum then the line or check valve is faulty. Line and check valve are one unit.
