Rating the Fuel Gauge

Since installing a new fuel sending unit last year, I have been trying to "rate" the fuel gauge - seeking to get fuel readings at each demarcation. Finally got it done (it is sometimes tough to catch a gas station right when the needle is on the desired mark). The readings actually taken, of course, were the amounts needed to fill the tank from each mark (gallons used).

Anyway, it turned out to be surprisingly consistent. With a full tank having 23.8 U.S. gallons, and with the red warning light coming on at 5.8 gallons remaining, I had hoped the 1/4 tank increments would be 4.5 gallons - and they were, right on the money!

OK, if no pics it didn't happen - so here's my gauge (though the red light shown as a square is actually a triangle - but I had to photoshop it in, so it's a square). The red light reading was taken just after the light came on.

I don't have a good reading for the "R" mark yet, but I am guessing it will come in at about 8 gal. remaining.

I have often thought the gauge was inaccurate - for example, 1/4 tank remaining of a 23.8 gallon tank should result in about 6 gallons remaining - but there are in fact 10.3 remaining. But when you subtract the 5.8 gallon reserve when the red light comes on, and realize that the 1/4 tank increments are apparently indicating the fraction of the 18 gallons available before the light comes on, it makes sense - and is quite accurate.

Some sources I have indicate a 2 gallon reserve when the red light comes on - but mine has been consistent at 5.8 gallons, which is what others report as well.

The statement above explains why it seemed inaccurate to me - when you have 1/2 tank indicated in a 23.8 gallon tank, one would expect somewhere near 12 gallons to be necessary to fill the tank - but only 9 gallons were required.

But when I realized the 1/4 tank markings seem to be calibrated for the 18 gallon difference between the 5.8 gallon reserve and the 23.8 gallon full tank, and each was quite precise at being 4.5 gallons, it was a pleasant surprise.

My old fuel sending unit was not anywhere near as accurate. With it, from the "R" mark, 10 gallons would fill the tank.

The gauge is pointing directly at the R on mine when the light comes on and the tank still contains about 6 gallons.

Simple rule of thumb I use is that I need to find a gas station in a hundred or so miles of the light. That still leaves me a good cushion, but of course that's with the exceptionally fuel efficient and economical 380SL. :D

Excellent glove box reference material for my next (near) Canada-Mexico-Canada jaunt.

Hope you don't mind, Herr Sky, I updated the graphic with your latest finding.

Good road,

No, great - I updated my own photo, and yes, it's in my glove box - and another is inserted into my owners documentation packet.

At one time I expected the red light would come on when the needle reached "R" on mine, but it doesn't. It comes on when the needle gets to the light. Probably a good reason to "rate" the gauge in each of these old cars.

Great Post Skylaw!

I've often wondered about that as I have never been sure about the reserve light so I always fill up as soon as possible when it comes on, and I am usually buying about 18 gallons at that point.

I had no idea that there was over 5 gallons in reserve, now I can rest easier when that light starts shining....
