I was on cars.com and found what looks to be a nice 1983 380SL, I really do not know much about this model, so I turn to the experts, is this a fair price? It is $7995, 122,491 miles, it is at a local dealer. I have not seen it in person but may go look on Monday.
That's where a lack of service records just kills a deal. 30-40K chain replacement would be preventative maintenance. Yours would be due for a second or third chain. Problem is, at 122K you;re also getting close to the time where you should start watching for tooth wear on the cams gears. And they're hard to come by, so you're back to the upgrade.
I think the single row chain and guides need to be replaced about every 40K as opposed to the dual row which is good for about 100K. With the dual row it is more about the guides than the chain.
