Thanks Werner,
I looked @ Timevalve vs The Clasic Centre and the cost was slightly less at the Classic Centre. Which suprised me, I expected Timevalve to be alot higher. But with the MBCA 15% discount ,I decided to go there. I'm only replacing from the headers to the center muffler. The PO replaced the center muffler back with rear muffler with OEM. I was thinking all stainless or none.. So i went the cheaper route.. I'll probably which I went all stainless.. I think after the discount and shipping it was about $500.00.
Good deal.
I had my exhaust done before I was aware the classic center existed. I've dealt with them a lot since. I find the classic center to be surprisingly competitive.
I need to log in more often. THANKS to Fotografa for the part #'s for the tri-y headers. Even though some parts are no longer available, I appreciate the effort. Thanks, mate!
Since there are still so many 107's still on the road, its a wonder that no one has developed more aftermarket parts, such as headers, for them. I have to beleive that the demand would be there if someone was to fabricate a header kit for these old soldiers. Maybe D-Bat is on to something.
Supply and demand, the owners of these cars are not the same type as owners who drive Camaro's so off the shelf tuning parts are not readily available. Everyone sells seat kits, tops and carpets because that's what SL owners would prefer to spend their money on if they had $1200 to burn.
True, true. Maybe the next generation of 107 owners will make some progress. At 60, I probably fall in the average age of 107 owners. I plan to keep mine and will it to one of the kids. If it was only about performance, I'd get an SL65 and be done with it. But I love this old car and if the trade off is performance vs. the classic body style, I'll take the styling.
Yep, It's hard to keep up with that rat race. Even my 6.9 now has less hp then most minivans on sale today.
I've debated getting rid of my SL and a bunch of other cars in exchange for a 2005 E55 or SL500. While i'm sure that they're expensive to maintain, it can't be as bad as trying to keep up with 13 or so 25(+) year old MB's.
I think the only thing I'm going to do to my 450 is headers+exhaust. I'll be fabing it all up but if I can get some stock headers that'd make, making the new ones easier.
If I wanted lots of performance out of mine I'd swap a m113 motor in. I think that's the newer ones that make 340+hp. From what I've been reading just the way the head/block design is it's pretty limited as far as machinability to open things up. I also don't want to touch my 450 much because it's only got 44k miles on it. Trying to keep it as close to original as possible.
I'd like to get a not so mint one to do an engine swap on but I already have enough projects with my VW TDI and Audi VR6 swap.
Well, the problem almost everyone seriously thinking about this has faced is that modern >2 valve/cyl engines are wider than their earlier counterparts, because their heads are wider. There isn't a heck of a lot of room in the W107 engine compartment, and the steering gear and idler on the other side make good headers (or any exhaust, for that matter) extremely difficult to fabricate. Certainly, anything can be done with limitless time, resources, and money; there is a picture of a W107 with an old-school 426 Hemi (a VERY large engine) in it. You can bet that it has an entirely new custom frame, steering, massively reshaped inner fenders (if any!), a larger transmission tunnel (structural, and a pretty massive effort) and so on. An M119 has been done (with significant difficulties) in a W126; I've never seen one in a W107, probably for width problems.
