This was a complete AMG engine upgrade available for the M117 (pre 560) which includes cams, lifters, port and polished heads and intake manifolds. Also, available were larger displacements, 5.2 and 5.4 liters.
One of the most common and popular AMG upgrades was the complete AMG body kit which included front air dam, side skirts, and rear apron and optional trunk spoiler.
AMG offered several wheel upgrades which included the popular Five Spoke Wheel 16"X8" ET11 and Aero I 16X8 (slightly curved facade) and 17X8 (flat facade).
Three AMG steering wheels were offered during the production as picture here and listed from top to bottom. 1. Version II (+83) 2. All AMG steering wheels could also be color matched to your interior color including the OEM wheel. 3. Version III (+88/89), 4. Version I (80+).

One upgrade that I have not seen available in MPH is the 107/AMG speedometer. Though in this example MPH speeds are denoted in blue within the diameter at 35, 55 and 85 MPH.
One of the most expensive and rare upgrades made available by AMG was the Getrag Manual Transmission. There are two versions that I am aware of that were mounted in the very few numbers known today Getrag 262 and Getrag 265 "Dog Leg" versions. Both utilizing close ratio configurations.

Another interior addition available for the R/C107 was a HI-FI upgrade which included custom map pockets/speaker enclosures and rear quarter speakers as installed in the Beverly Hills 5spd example.
One of the early AMG signatures was the chrome delete option. This was a costly proposition. All the exterior chrome was removed, etch primed and painted to match the body color or as seen commonly on lighter colored vehicles the chrome painted a satin black.
Too true. It was an option then but not for the 107. AMG said it wouldn't fit, not me. Picture is from an '87 AMG Catalogue.
It was ONLY around 39K exchange.
Here are a couple of pages I just scanned from a circa 1987 AMG Technical manual, some really good info.
The first photo is rumored/claimed by POS to be his former SL with the original wheels as delivered. The last sketch is of the elusive exhaust I've been searching for.
Just wanted to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread. This is exactly the kind of info I have been seeking!
I want to AMG-ize my 350 Euro and the parts (body kit for starters) are really hard to come by - must be patient, someone will divest at some point, no?
I have been considering a Getrag 265/5 and am aware of the modification/ fabrication hurdles. Has anyone driven the 'regular' MB 4-spd, as in my 72 Euro, as well as a Getrag-equipped 107? I'd be interested in hearing about it.
Thanks 48. You have a truly beautiful car!
My '72 350SL Euro has an MB 4spd which, while certainly preferable to an automatic, is rather clunky, vague and does not really have great ratios.
I am considering AMG-izing this car, in my own fashoin. Before any aesthetic work takes place (e.g. a complete 'black-out'), I am considering a Getrag 265/5 close-ratio dog leg.
I'm planning on checking into a 500sl AMG (automatic with no documentation), and wondering if anyone has some advice on how to most easily check for various harder-to-see modifications:
- LSD Differential
- AMG Cams
- Exhaust
- Any less-than-obvious items?
- Verify Chrome delete is original?
- Maybe do a carfax report to try to determine history?
- Suspension?
Obvious Items:
- Steering wheel
- Ground effects all around
- Chrome delete
LSD diff will typically have a tag located on the passenger side of the pumpkin facing rearward.
As most all early AMG cams utilized solid lifters, you can check thru the oil fill cap to identify the solid lifter retainers/keepers prior to pulling the valve cover.
It has never been confirmed whether AMG offered a pre cat exhaust ie headers/downpipes as the OE tri-y system was available much earlier than the W126 tri-y system, it was so efficient and the engine bay is just so small the gains would have been negligible.
Suspension on the early examples were sometimes just "cut" OE springs. Otherwise once a deal was in place with Eibach they were typically powered coated white and bilstein shocks had AMG decals/pn.
Chrome delete was an option, a green self-etching primer was typically used. The several examples of AMG chrome delete examples, all the chrome was painstakingly removed from the vehicle for prepping and priming. So tape marks on rubber would be a dead give away of not original or a respray.
Good luck with the purchase. That example deserves a good home and period wheels!
Read the first page of this thread. It will answer some questions.
Cams: The only way I know is to remove a cover and look at the rear of the cam. You will need a mirror and light.
Exhaust: I doubt if the AMG would have lasted this long. Check the headers or down pipes to see if they are TriY. I thought all 500's had them but recently saw they do not.
Chrome delete: Don't know of a way to verify.
What wheels are on it? Do you have a pic?
Tri Y down pipes pic.
I believe it was only vehicles with cats that didn't get them.
I could be wrong.
