1987 560SL - difficulty in getting the sun visor off

Need to slide off the passenger sun visir so that I can insert a new male visor clip. I 'm following the directions that Bud's Benz gave me...."Lossen Phillips screw 1 ful turn, Manipulate visor & rod so that they are pointed in the same direction as shown" - no good, the visor will move about a 1/2 inch down the rod and just stop. I called Bud Benz's and they say that Mercedes built in two internal nipples into the sun visor/rod so that they were difficult to steal. He said to put the visor at a 180 degree angle which is the sweet spot for the visor to slide off - no good! I tried 180 degrees up and down and then slowly at all degrees carefully trying to slide the visor and I can't seem to find this sweet spot.
Any ideas or directions, suggestions on what I mat be doing wrong? It seems so simple but I can't get it to slide more than a half inch - need about another 1/2 to clear the indentation so as to be able to slide on the new clip. hgb

Seems you are doing it right. Keep fiddling. Your elex wire to the mirror lamp isn't holding you back is it? If so you may have to disconnect.

Rocky - thanks for the reply. I'm aware of the wire and keeping my eye on it as I try to remove the visor - if it come to the point where it is preventing the visor from disengaging I will have to disconnect - hgb

The rod elbow and the visor have to be aligned in the same plane, that is, all lying flat. I suppose that is what Bud's instructions indicate?
You need to pull fairly hard.
You might find things a bit easier to fiddle with if you remove the whole visor assembly off the car.

Which leads to my query about the visor, I can't seem to be able to pull the plastic headliner off after I remove the screw that points to the floor at the top of the windscreen... any tricks there?

Hope I explained it clearly enough...

for cctoronto

You must remove the rear view mirror.

Grasp mirror stem and give a man-sized tug to left or right. It will snap out since it is held in by a spring-loaded pin. You will not break it so don't be timid. Replacement will be intuitive albeit a little harder to do.
