Well, the search has finally ended.

With the help of several BW members and others, relentless searching and countless "wanted' ads, I have found the ONE. Thank you everyone for your patience and assistance.

I took delivery of this 1982 500SL 040 Black on Saffron Java AMG. She is quite unique example that has been loved and well looked after by the previous owner, a wonderful man and enthusiast, for the past 14 years.

I look forward to spending more time on this board and furthering my understanding of these wonderful W107's.

Here's a quick photo taken on San Bruno Mountain in the San Francisco Bay Area yesterday.

Man, that's UGLY!!!
You need to sell that before someone else sees it.;)
I will be willing to take it off your hands for a paltry sum.:cool:

Congratulations on that very unique and absolutely beautiful vehicle.

Serious congratulations – 5-speed too, that’s really a good result from a lot of searching effort. I was beginning to wander if your ads would come up with anything, but it sure looks good. More pics p-lease!!

Great find. Love to see photos and a story line about the hunt for that 500SL AMG.

I came close to purchasing one back in 1983 when I was looking to buy - toyed purchasing the 280SL manual, AMG manual, and the 380SL domestic. Though my 380SL is a very nice car, its not in the league of an AMG by todays standards.

Congratulations on your purchase.

Not only did Henric get a 5-spd manual tranny 500SL AMG, but he ended up finding and buying the one that was listed as a "trade-in" on my Classic Motors bill of sale. Yep, the original owner of my car ordered an SL AMG, but when that car showed up, he passed on it and ordered a second car that I now own. On my original bill of sale, there is that first car's VIN number on it listed as a trade-in, and that's the car that Henric just bought. Same VIN number. Amazing. So, using my paperwork, we can verify with 100% certainty that Henric's AMG is a genuine AMG. How cool is that? I'm absolutely stoked he found that car - what are the odds?

The owner history was given as such:

The SL was originally purchased from Ron Greespan Motors in San Francisco by a successful SF attorney. *The SL was traded in ten years later for a newer MB at Smythe European Mercedes Benz in Santa Clara, CA. The second owner purchased the SL from Smythe and only kept it for about a year before returning it to that same dealership. *At which time the owner from whom I purchased it from picked it up and had babied it ever since 1994. *He is certified MB master technician and has cared for the SL with much enthusiasm. Coincidently he had also serviced this very vehicle back in 1984.

Meanwhile, whilst browsing these boards I came across a thread posted by POS titled, "Anyone want the first AMG 5-speed brought into the USA?"

Go figure, as luck would have it the VIN listed on POS's original invoice as the trade-in vehicle for his SL is the exact SL I now own! What a small world and absolutely astounding coincidence!

The SL is in fine shape overall. The body has a few dings and a couple of minor scratches. The interior is well kept with only a few pleats requiring attention. Mechanically the vehicle is superb and only required a bit of deferred maintenance attention. New rotors and pads were installed as was a new starter.

Next on this list are tires and firm up the suspension a bit. The secondary challenge will be to locate the original AMG/Sebring exhaust and muffler as it's since been replaced.

The 500SL AMG's acceleration is absolutely remarkable. Driving across the Guadeloupe Canyon, location to the famous Bullit car chase, ripping thru each of the gears is truly stimulating. Why Mercedes did not offer a manual transmission is beyond me?

Needless to say the vehicle is insanely fast, throaty as all hell and exactly, actually more than what I'd been searching for.

Apparently because Mercedes had already started that commitment to automatic transmissions they brag about.

This does give hope for the rest of us that a Getrag 5 speed could somehow be fitted to regular US V8 107's. Any idea if it's a special Getrag to these cars, or if some sort of bellhousing adapter is used for say a BMW version? It's doubtful the stock driveshaft length would be the same as the slushbox, so that may take some custom work.

I suppose the clutch pedal assembly is parts bin since 280SL's had manual transmission options...wouldn't be bad if used a hydraulic clutch, else not sure how a mechanical linkage may have to be adapted for the V8.

Appreciate any other details of how this is done you can share (even better with pix). Thanks for sharing your beauty!

!

Now you have the trio of 500's - some day a photo shoot is in order!

Love that speedo! The cam covers have any AMG labels (hard to discern) - any AMG mods such as headers/mechanical rockers?

The manual makes you realize the potent nature of the M117 without the 25-30% power drain of the slushbox.
