Anyone know what this might be before I break down and take it to the shop:
Loud clunk, which sounds like the whole back end of the car is going to come apart. Happens with sharp right hand turns (or swerves in that direction), plus when backing out from the driveway.
Tried getting the back wheels up off the floor and putting it into reverse, sound is not duplicated this way. Nor when jumping up and down on the back bumper. Nor when pushing on the car's rear to get the suspension to move laterally. It's quite literally only when the drive train is under load and with the aforementioned movements.
Nothing is obviously loose or worn out back there when I look underneath the car.
I see two (what look to me like) CV joint type axles out back instead of a banjo type. If this type of noise was on the front end of a FWD car, I'd immediately start thinking in terms of a CV problem, or perhaps wheel bearings. Do you think I might be on the right track here?
What they've sent does not match the part pictured, in that there is no built in nut on the threaded shaft. Instead there is a hex shaped hole in the head of the shaft. Of course this means that there is no way to hold the shaft on the end that goes into the hub without getting at the end of that shaft.
So 1) if I remove the brake rotor, will that in fact enable me to get at the hole in shaft 2) how is the brake rotor removed - I've already taken the caliper off in the hopes that it is a floating unit that I could just pull off and that doesn't seem to be the case (unless it's rusted on).
Should I just return these parts and look for replacements that are a better match for what I took off.
Mwalsh, if the vendor link I posted has caused you grief, I apologize. They served me without any issues for a number of years, otherwise I'd not have used that link. When I ordered the same pieces for my '78 I ordered Karlyn by model year and received Karlyn parts, with the hex boss, which matched the car, and the pic I posted. FWIW I think what you received may be mis labeled. Not that the reason why matters when the parts in your hand are wrong....
There are two types. One that has a nut and one that is threaded directly into the back plate. One needs the whell, caliper, rotor removed and one that doesn't.
What ever you originally HAD....is what you need.
So I'm guessing that your recommedation is to send these back and find them from another vendor?
I must say that it's kinda annoying that this vendor pictures a part that they don't send the match for.
Edit: I've just fired off the following letter of complaint to this vendor. The more I think about it, the more I'm ticked about the perceived misrepresentation and the waste of $15 for 2-day UPS shipping. :crybaby2:
"Yesterday I received my order for 2 x part # 115 320 15 89 and am not happy with the parts in the slightest.
The Karlyn parts you shipped a) do not match what I have taken off my car and b) do not match what you have pictured on your website.
Now that I have researched a bit more, I understand that there are two versions of this part - the Karlyn/Meyle version, which does not have an integral nut on the threaded shafts, and the Lemfoerder version which does have this nut. I don't know what the application for the Karlyn version of this part is supposed to be, but I cannot use it on the W107 SL without major disassembly of the rear hubs. Something I am not prepared to do.
Fair enough that in the product description for this part you indicate that it is by Karlyn, but it is the Lemfoerder version of the part you picture. Someone who did not know the difference (as was applicable to me before researching) would be misled into thinking they would receive the part as pictured.
So if I can suggest that you change the picture of this part to more accurately represent what will be shipped? And please contact me about returning these parts."
I've now found a vendor local to my office (Pelican Parts in El Segundo) that has the Lemfoerder parts in stock. So if I can will-call them on Monday, I could probably come home from work early and get 'er done.
Glad mine were easy to put on. Took me about 1 hour to do both sides.
If you cannot find parts in LA you aren't trying. Most of the big parts suppliers are located in around there. They make and store tons of parts out in the Evil Empire(inland empire). For stupid small parts the dealer will set you up with the correct part the 1st time around. I've only seen one part number for this part and it is for the 115 chassis so they used the same part on about 15different cars. Are you sure the part is different?
I'm kind of surprised mercedes used all sealed bearings back 30 years ago. I haven't ever found any grease fitting. Good to hear your car is back on the road. There are tons of car parts businesses out in the Evil empire around corona, fontana, san birdoo, etc.
no dangers with broken sway bar links. Their function is to link to rear sway bar which stabilizes your rear during turns. So just take turns easy especially in ramps on/off freeways as your handling is compromised. But you should fix this right away as it ultimately is a safety hazard especially for other motorists!
