dashboard wood

Now that I refurbished the console wood, I took a close look at the dashboard wood.
The edges of the small veneer pieces have curled.

I pried a piece off.....

.....and attempted to flatten it, with predictable results. It shattered.

I recalled posts by Scott and NF where they talked about fitting new veneer into the metal channel, Scott from a purpose-built kit, NF from a Home Depot substitute.
Then I remembered a box sent with the car by the little old lady in Florida who sold it to me.

Lo and behold, it contains an OEM dashboard wood kit, which comprises veneer attached to new metal trim.

Now, all I have to do is figure out how to remove the old trim and install the new.

I will reveal progress in due course.

I didn't have wood to remove but a small hair drier worked in no time at all.

ussun, blow is just an expression, it shouldn't be taken literally. Next time try the vacuum cleaner.

The new dashboard trim is now on and it was simple.

Except for the glovebox trim which is secured by 4 screws, the metal trim pieces are held on by friction-fit pins. A little gentle prying and they're off, complete with switches, which can then be disconnected and removed from the front. ( BTW this is the easy way to remove the switches compared to the methods described elsewhere recently by ussun, roncallo, et al)

The only head-scratcher was how to remove the glovebox lock from the trim piece. I won't describe it; anyone stumped can ask me.

Dugald,

I am trying to renew the dash trim wood. I tried forcing a small screwdriver behind the metal piece with the wood trim and leverage but the small screwdriver started to bend and the thing would no let go.

I left it as I was afraid I would break it. I was trying with the rightmost trim and before dismounting the globe box I though I'd asked you what do you mean by gentle prying?

Was it hard? can I pull without fear? what do you rekon?

Thanks in advance.

Bereng

I didn't have to pry hard at all. There are just a couple of friction fit pins on each piece....certainly nothing that should bend a screwdriver blade.
Perhaps yours has a different arrangement?
