As posted previously,to get around a piece of legislation the cars were sold in the USA only as 350's. To still have the badge tells me the car has been well looked after. The rubber under coat ,under the car, is PVC and has been used by Mercedes since 1959. Great stuff if it's OK.
I love the looks of a black SL ,what color folding top does it have?. If it matches the interior it will be stunning looking with it erected.
The 'metal plate thing' was used by dealers in the 70's in much the same way as those old credit card imprinters used to work. The plate was inserted in a machine and used to enter service work done on the car. Somewhere ,there will be detailed records of all dealer work done on that car and you can request a copy of it from your local Daimler AG affiliated Workshop.
You wont fiod that for a Mustang... :-))
Slow trans takeup is a symptom if old age with those trans i'm affraid. Get it serviced and add some Lucas ( or similar) trans treatment and it will last OK for another 30 years. Check the trans linkage to make sure the two nylon bushes are still OK.
The small is probably a sign it's running to rich, possibly a leaking cold start injector which will also explain the lumpy idle. these cars smooth from cold start with idle at 1500 rpm slowing to 750-800RPM when the engine reaches running temp.
Another really important thing to remember is to replace every single peice of rubber in the fuel system from the tank forward.. More than one Djet equipped merc has burnt down because of rotten fuel lines bursting under pressure.
Hi Rob - late to the party but welcome!
350SLs rule - it's always good to be younger than your car.

I have the same under my 350's carpets.

After its warm its fine. Is this normal? (It did not do that when I first looked at the car but I did add Fuel System cleaner to the gas tank and thats when the problem seemed to start.)
Mine does the same thing. I talked to the PO about this, and they had gone to the trouble of writing to MB about the issue (they are MB nuts). I have the letter back from MB in my history file which points to a problem with the "warm up air slide". Now I have no idea if this is the case - but hey, that's what they said! I'm used to it now and don't let it bother me.
