For Shame. How could yo do that to your sweet, innocent little sister?
Pitiful!
Proof of ownership to any dealer, and they should be able to run recall report. I have heard it is still being honored by MB, but look out for initial static... and around $300plus for labor and parts to replace the mounts... They are not included in the recall.

Where is it again that we are going... And why are we in a handbasket?
If your frame is cracked, the recall will replace the sub frame. If it is not yet cracked there is a repair procedure in which they weld support gussets to strengthen the control arm mounts.
On my '78, a visual inspection shows the sub frame to be newer looking, and obviously so, than the rest of the under carriage.

I called the dealer and they asked me when I wanted to schedule the check and/or repair. Still haven't gotten around to it though. Maybe before the top down driving season starts here in Minnesota.
Personally, I hope they find a crack so that I can get a new one put in rather than just weld in some gussets.

Jack up the front end and get under there with some degreaser/solvent and clean the thing. Take a look near the back of the subframe to see if it is cracked, it might be very small.
The only reason you'd want them to replace the whole thing involves new rubber bushings and all that.
At some point, my subframe must have cracked and the owner replaced it out of his own pocket. My dealer inspected it, and it's one of the new design, but the recall has never been charged to my car. So I didn't have to pay anything, and I don't have to worry about it cracking. Best of both worlds.

When I bought my 73 and registered it with MB, they told me about the recall and I took it to my local dealer and they never batted an eye. They ordered the parts and made an appointment just like a warranty issue on a new car. When I brought it in, they did a free inspection of all the critical parts, like a PPI and everything except a few leaks (minor fixes, ultimately) passed with flying colors. However, my MB dealer is exceptional in their treatment of owners of older cars. Others from this forum have had the same experience with Mercedes Benz of St. Clair Shores.

My Mercedes keep me so broke, I can't even pay attention!!
Hello,
New owner of an 82' 380SL since April 07. This is my first time reply to a thread. I am thanking God for this opportunity to do this. My sub-frame broke this afternoon and I am sitting here telling about it, "THANK GOD." It happened on my way back to work driving at freeway speed. I decided to stop by the supermarket to pick up some grocery to prepare dinner. "THANK GOD." it broke when I was doing 30MPH. I read about this not too long ago and check my car soon after. There were no cracks nor signs of cracking. It just HAPPENED.
Please don't even check yours. Just have the reinforcement kit done...Here are some pictures of my incident.
Here are some more pictures since the last attachment was limited to only five pictures.
I live in the San Jose, California. The car is now at a frame and alignment specialist. I was visiting a local dismantling yard last week and saw a 1979 450SLC. I am thinking of going back there tomorrow and get dirty pulling the sub-frame. Any advise would be highly appreciated.
Just checking my sanity...Are SLC's the same as SL...It probably is. I am still shaken from earlier. Do I have to remove the engine from the donor car to get to the sub frame? Pleassse...Help. I hope I don't have to drop the engine to do this...
The wheel on a dolly picture is at the shop...They have a system for everything.

Most of the stuff on an SLC will fit an SL - at least from the doors forward. The subframes will swap without a problem. Make sure the one you pull is already fixed before you put it on. Might not be a bad thing to take some cleaner with you and clean up the weld joints on the new subframe so you can inspect them before you pull it. Be a shame to go through all that labor only to find it's already cracked.
Unfortunately, the 380SL was never covered under the recall, so your possible remedies through MB are limited.
