As built by the factory

Pictures of a 560SL that was driven 800 miles then stored. It looks just like the factory original. If you're restoring your car to factory original, this is what you're aiming for. Click on the picture to see a slightly larger version.

If I had one that nice I would certainly be happy.....but since I don't.....I think it is just TOO pretty. I'd need a new wardrobe........

That makes me want to just drive mine down to the scales and sell it for scrap iron.
Thanks Scott, your car makes me feel I have a junker and now this!

Oh well, it is a sharp ride.

Although it's a beautiful SL and in as new condition I look at it another way.

That car is IMO unloved, a little sad and too good to use.

At 900kms on the odo it has almost no fantastic holidays, day trips or experiences with a partner in the passenger seat that our SL's have in droves. It will also probably be sold to someone who will continue to keep it in a sterile storage condition or drive it very little and so it will have missed the point of being created.

If it was Australian delivered [RHD] and I could afford it, I don't know if I could drive it like I do with my own SL. It should at least sit in a MB dealers showroom and be seen.

Not locked away.

What would you do?

Drive it or store it?

Look at the jack points on the lift holding the car up in the air, touching soft metal. OUCH!

I'd drive the car inside out. There's hardly no time in America anymore to be storing things away for the future. Enjoy it while you can.

Scott, I can't tell on the 560s pics or on your signature but are your jack points covered with plugs?

If so, I want some. I wonder if they are the same for all M-B?

There's a guy up in the 123 forum in Vancouver who got them from the dealer for peanuts.

Mine aren't, I can't tell on the pictures of this 560. I'll ask next time I'm at the dealer and see if they make them.

I noticed when this thread was "stickied" to keep the pictures available, we lost the Frapper thread. Is there a limit to how many threads can be stickied? If so, is the main goal to keep the pictures easily available or the entire thread? If it's just the pictures, I'll be glad to copy them and host them on my website (HalBlog) where I've already written up some repair procedures. That would preserve the pics without requiring a sticky thread.

Would that help or make a difference?

There's a limit, but it's arbitrary and Ike keeps it in his head.

I guessed that the Frapper thread was unstickied because there were very few people who put themselves on the map. It seemed a fair trade.

The issue with a car that has seen no life on the street, is that inevitably, when it does finally get out, it will fall to pieces. Scratches, fluid leaks, corroded metals... regardless of how well it has been stored, 20+ years without proper regular flogging is going to have an undesired effect. how were the chassis rubbers preserved? suspension components? even simple things like shock absorbers, would have required to be removed and inverted regularly, to keep the piston seals lubed. Sadly, the only real future the car has, is in a display, away from greasy fingered, drooling slackjawed yokels. If someone stored this car 'properly' the storage maintenance costs, have far outweighed any value the owner has perceived for the car, if it's going for 50K.
what a crying shame.

Is that softtop black or dark brown like the original order receipt states?

Strange that one from the factory has that much red overspray on the undercarrage.
Although Iv'e never looked under one that that original.

Love the look of the interior

Needs Euro bumpers and lights. Then I will be truely jealous.

What year?

Mine is an '88 and the stop light is nearer the rear of deck lid on mine. This really makes me appreciate what a deal I got and how nice mine is. It shows a bit of wear but very little after looking at this

'86 and '87 had that ugly wart affixed to the trunk lid at the hinged end. '88 and '89 had the (slightly less) ugly wart affixed to the rear of the deck lid.

Scott, since this is your thread, I'd like to get your input. This thread will be in the sticky at the top of the forum. Do you think we should remove the chat (mine included) and let the pictures stand alone? The thread can be locked at that point.

My concern is that if some future moderator does away with the link in the sticky, the locked thread will never rise to the top again. It will only be available to those who know how to search for it.

Thoughts, Scott or anyone else?
