I took my 450SL out for a run today, while the weather was still fair. (If you don't drive 'em, they get very cranky.)
Anyhow, as I passed a school bus, several young male teenagers hung out of the window and shouted hoots of praise for my car. Including "very sexy"!
So rest assured, my fellow SL owners -- these cars will hold their value. Because "the future of our country" considers these cars to be sex bombs!!!
A future classic? I would say that the R107 was an instant classic the day it first rolled off the production line. How many cars are there that start appearing in motor museums before it`s production has ceased? Not many I can think of.
Of course that has something to do with the fact that the R107 was produced for so long but that in itself tells you everything you need to know about how good this car was.... and remains. It looks great with the hard-top on, it looks great with the soft-top up and it is simply beautiful without either.
It simple, elegant lines are timeless. Which, of course,is why it effectively ran for very nearly twice the usual lifespan of an SL model.
The R107 is already a modern classic and it is great to see that young people recognise that they have the opportunity to experience and enjoy a true motoring icon and that it`s position as such is assured.
Ditto on the comments. I had to bring our car to get smoged last week and overheard a couple of teens (also in the waiting room) asking their dad what kind of car that was (pointing at my car) being tested. The dad knew and told them, The kids replied "Thats a sweet convertible".
That was nice to hear this coming from a younger generation, i'm use to getting these comment from "older" folk but not from kids. Oh yes, our 560LS passed smog with flying colors...even nicer to hear
