SL Dilema
Hey Group,
Got a problem, sort of. I have a '81 380 sl w/126,000k. I just had it repainted (original sun yellow), new top, new tires & got things running great. I love this car & waited to find one this color combo & being rust free (Ca. car). Now I find a one owner '86 560 sl with 42,000 original miles, garage kept & rust free. Color is dark grey w/black interior (not my favorite). Very clean car with clear car fax. I think a great price $10,900. What to do? Sell one that I love & buy the other because it's a great dea? I would have to sell mine which is in storage for the winter. The 560 won't last long, I don't think. Or is it such a good deal that I buy it to re-sell? Can I make a good profit if I go this route? What is this car worth? I really don't want to own 2 sl's. It really is a beautiful car. Any thoughts?
I wouldn't sell it. If you have the extra money available, and if it wouldn't hurt to lose it, then go ahead and buy the other car. Anything could happen. The planet could be hit by a killer asteroid tomorrow. You may not get your $10K back. But I wouldn't sell a car that I'd waited for and loved.

I personally know the owner of the dealership. He is a friend & we used to work together. That is the reason for the price break. This car is not available at this price to the public. This is a fresh trade from my hometown & I knew the original owners. Not a car someone was trying to "unload". He is doing me a favor...
Wow! That's a great price for a 560 with that kind of mileage. This is a tough one but judging from my experience and from what I've been hearing from other people is that the market for these old cars isn't that good. If you're really happy with your 380 and you don't want to risk being stuck with another car I would pass. Or try selling the Saab now, and if you're lucky and you can sell it, replace it with the 560.

This will give you an idea of what people are asking for their's. If you can afford it, I believe that you could make a sizeable profit on this, especially if you detail it and market it correctly. I've sold many cars over the years by doing just that!
The deal you're getting really does seem like a great deal, and if it's as good as it seems, you've got a very nice friend . . . Unless you're willing to risk that relationship, I wouldn't buy it only to gain what would be a windfall profit. The bottom line? Ditch the Saab, get the 560 and keep it.
