VIN decoding.

Be assured I have tried every recommended VIN decoder site that has been mentioned on this and other forums. All either want 17 digits or stop at 1980. That said here goes: My 1975 280 SL has a VIN of 107 042 10 000605. I know the 042 is for the 280SL, the 1 is for LHD, the 0 is manual tranny and the 000605 is the production number. There must have been more than 605 107's made by 1975. Does this mean my car is the 605th 280SL? the 605th 280SL with 5-spd? or what? I have already found out that the 5-spd (G76/27-5) is extremely rare and was wondering about the provenance of the whole car. Any info much appreciated.

RE: VIN decoding.

Your car is, in fact, the 605th 280SL constructed. And yes, it's HUGELY rare with a 5spd, so you got a rare bird indeed.

The options badge also has other info for the car so post that.

RE: VIN decoding.

Unfortunately there is no options badge. The hood, passenger side fender and radiator cross piece had been replaced. The VIN badge was put back but that is all. Is there an on-line site that could tell me from the VIN what was on the car when new? where it was made, when etc. I still have the Dealers sticker
on the glove compartment door so I know it originally was sold in Dusseldorf. Would that line of enquiry go anywhere?
Thanks

RE: VIN decoding.

I contacted the site you supplied and was told they would mail what info they had but as it was a euro 280 not to expect much. Thanks for your interest.
Check out my new post on 107 pricing.
