All the threads I have read about care and storage of the soft top. I have never read anything about using a towel or thin pillow between the plastic window while it is being folded down. On my 75 vette you always used a towel so the plastic window(while folded) does not rub on itself. Is this not a problem with the 107s. Thanks
Not only have I read it, I was already practicing the rolled-up towel before then. When asked, I pass along this tidbit of info as well. Thanks for bringing it to the attention of this "General Care" sticky. I think it is excellent advice.

Where is it again that we are going... And why are we in a handbasket?
On my 560SL I use "Klear to Sea" which is a marine eisenglass cleaner. It is specifically designed for cleaning clear plastic windows- and it works great on the SL top. Also I used NOVUS plastic cleaner on the slightly scratched sections. It comes in three strengths- One, Two and Three. #3 is for heavy scratches, #2 for light and #1 is a polish/cleaner. Took the slight haze out (with # two) and made the windows very nice (after using #one).

Has anybody replaced their own conv. top on an SL? I have put one on a dodge and one on a VW bug and it was definitely a 2-person job. I had one put on a BMW 325 by a so-called Xpert and they did such a lousy job i took it back apart and redid it myself (after they charged me $450 labor) So i wonder if i should try putting my own on a 560Sl or just send the car out..Pete Walls
I just tried cleaning some of that white residue from my soft top rear window with Meguires Clear Window cleaner [#17]. Using a micro fibre cloth and following the instructions on the bottle it worked a treat.
The window is almost as good as new.

I replaced mine last year and did it myself. A good Day's job. make note of how the current top fits; I took pictures. Then careful alignment and contact cement in the right places. The trick is to have just the right tension overall. My replacement top came with the front lip bend marked with tailors chalk. It was the perfect fit using that mark.
I received a 450 sl 1980 from my father-in-law. I thought the top was fine but after a long trip it began to tear. I don't think the top has been out in over 15 years. Are there tops available that are made from a newer materials that are better than the older material? Where are good sources to get a new top? What should I look out for?
I think the quality was good ,after 26 years it's allowed to break.
Here is a link where I bought new carpet and a new top the price is $305 which is a good price also the delivery is fast .
I had very good experience with the owner John. http://motors.search.ebay.com/_W0QQs...psandinteriors
Can I scotchguard my top to make it more water resistant. When I get caught in one of those Colorado gully washers, my top seems to get soaked to the bone.
