Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 53, was arrested for riding a manatee on Sept. 30.
Florida woman arrested over ride on manatee
Florida police arrested a woman Saturday who had been photographed riding a manatee – a violation of the state’s Manatee Sanctuary Act, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 53, was arrested at the Sears store where she worked. She came forward in October to admit that she was the woman in the photographs, wearing a white cap, red shorts and a black bikini top as she tried to climb atop a manatee in Fort De Soto Park in Pinellas, Fla.
Garcia Gutierrez told authorities that she was new to the area and didn’t know that touching a manatee – also known as a sea cow – was against the law.
The manatee was not injured, but the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Acts states that: "It is unlawful for any person at any time, by any means, or in any manner intentionally or negligently to annoy, molest, harass, or disturb or attempt to molest, harass, or disturb any manatee."
Touching a manatee is a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida, punishable by up to 60 days in jail. Two of the three species of sea cows are endangered, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the third is considered threatened. They received their first government protections in 1893.
Florida officials took the manatee-riding reports seriously and circulated the image of the woman, asking Floridians to identify her.
Sheriff Bob Gualtieri held a press conference and said that Garcia Gutierrez should “go ride a jet ski.”
Was in southern KY, like tenn, heading to mammoth cave when I stopped to ask a local along the road for directions. He was pointing and talking and he kept taking about when you see this billboard and went on about this billboard for some reason then abruptly raised his voice and yelled "don't pay no tenchun to that billboard." It had a women in a bathin suit on it.
No really Tenn is probably the prettiest state in america, imo, but for me I like WV and SE OH probably because I relate to the nature there better. Tenn, has a lot more pretty rivers and lakes than WV. The accents in Tenn, NC and S. Ky are different than WV, and the deep south. It has a higher pitch "arc" while WV and the south is a more coarse tone. S. OH and WV is more like Granny and Jed on the beverly hillbillies. Jethro and Ellie May is like Tenn.
But yes they all eat anything that crawls out of the weeds or swims in the water. They may as well have a ground hog pie festival here once a year.
We actually do have a state law regarding the consumption of road kill...
I don't think they do here. Probably most deer roadkill are in someones freezer and maybe a few turkeys. Other stuff including poodles with collars they just let rot for the buzzards. WV is different. They really worry about their stereotype after the decades of jokes and it shows in their laws too. They probably have a road kill law. You don't see dead stuff too much in WV because they have federally funded state clean up crews just for that. They sure haven't fixed their stereotype of being masters at getting federal money though. It's amazing the number of government vs civilian vehicles in WV.
