Tax policy and spending policy in the 90's were geared toward sustainable budgets with no little or no deficits, and the real architects of these policies were Clinton (D) and Gingrich (R).

These two leaders of their respective parties worked together to come up with practical solutions to real fiscal problems. If the Democrats and Republicans had been following their example since then, we wouldn't have had a recession at all, much less the current economic disaster.

Instead, the parties each purged their leadership positions of anyone who had anything to do with the policies of Bill and Newt and the result is more than a decade of the two parties co-enabling each other to give special tax breaks and rebates to their special interest groups from rich to middle class to poor (thus reducing revenues) and spending shit piles of money we never had and our children and grandchildren will never see.

Many heads on pikes would be a nice start.

He wants them to be true to their pledge. They got elected because they took this specific pledge, etc..

ya'll love to cut 'em up when they change their minds and now you want to cut 'em up because they won't.

Before we get all up on taxes of "the clinton" era could we return spending to those same levels? I'll even settle for "as a percentage of gdp".

Otherwise tax increases, revenue enhancements, etc are just a giant rhetorical excercise aka fiddle playing while Rome burns. The numbers are so big as to not be comprehended.

If you're waiting with baited breath to pay more taxes just whoop out that check book and write the feds a check...they'll cash it! You don't have to wait on an act of Congress to "do the write thing".
