OT: MP3 player recommendations and other MP3 questions for you MP3 people...

My E320 comes with an AUX port for COMAND II which has a 3.5mm socket in the glove box built-in. I suppose this is for MP3 players and possibly a portable satellite radio receiver.

What do most of you recognize as a good MP3 player out there? I have a PC so I think the iPod is out of the question. I know most of the people on this SLK forum has MP3 players hooked up, that's why I chose this forum to ask.

Also... where and how do I download MP3 files for *free*?? :-)

Thanks for any info...as I surf the web for MP3 stuff, I get impatient with all the information on MP3s.

MP3 players/ P2P software

The iPOD, although now PC compatible remains a bit of a ripoff because:

--the battery is hardwired and not replaceable. Just think what happens to car batteries as they get old and are subjected to cold. Expect the same for iPOD and other battery hardwired devices. For use in the car, it may not be a problem the unit going dead if you run it through the cig lighter

--the price. You can buy a Creative labs Zen with 2-3x the memory for the price of an iPOD...and it has a removable battery. I own two units. Once owned an iPOD. Although the Zen is a little heavier, it is a much beter unit and value IMHO. However, if size i an issue...go iPOD. The 60Gig Zen now goes for $399.

The creative labs site is http://www.creativelabs.com

re free mp3s....I currently use Kazaa. d/l it from cnet. I've used most of them ....napster, audiogalaxy, limewire (for my mac),etc....Kazaa is pretty good. You can now get a version of the software without the junk present in the free d/ls.

Its not just the size that make the iPod cool...

its the way the interface is designed. Nothing beats the scoll wheel. And the way it doesn't try to do to many things (rip songs) just be a damn good player. iTunes now comes on the PC and its free. The iPod really can't function without iTunes, but iTunes is easily one of the best music browsers out there. You'll need it to arrange your music into playlists. I always have a playlist called current that I put the songs I want to hear.

Size: can't be beat.
Battery: 8 hours
Capacity: even the 10gig holds enough songs
Price: get the 10 gig for $300!
Audio: One of the best hidden features, the iPod's D/A converter is one of the best, other players scrimp on this part. You can actually hear the difference between 128 and 160 bit rates.
It supports AAC which is mpeg4. I rip all my CDs at 190 but its size is only equivilent to 160 in mp3, of course at 160 AAC the file size will be 128 mp3 but the sound quality will be better.

It was just a sticker with post it type adhesive on it. So I peeled it right off.

I have both an Archos Jukebox and Recorder

The Recorder has a better screen, some extra buttons, and is USB 2.0 (faster). One thing that I like about the Archos units is that they install as a disk drive with no propritary software needed to copy to and from the unit. You can use it as a backup/transport drive as well as a MP3 player.
The Firmware isn't very good, but ther is an open source (free) replacement that is very good.
Take a look at Rockbox at http://rockbox.haxx.se
But then I'm biased, because I have contributed code to the Rockbox project.
