I am sure that this past week they have thought very highly of your presence or lack of it.........
The notes that I left for them filled with tasks to be accomplished gave them job satisfaction while I was gone. The souvenir key chains have been the subject of grateful discussion for days.

I am sure the discussion surrounded around the fact that souvenir piece of the keychain was cast in your likeness.........
On this subject, I attended a technical university in the 70's that would go out of its way to attract minorities. My impression was that those students worked really hard and were serious (I knew that more than a few of them were valedictorians in their high schools). The problem was, that their schools, teachers, and peers weren't very good. Many got shock treatment when they hit a tough school where everyone was at least fairly sharp by any standard (and they weren't alone - I never saw a "C" on anything, ever, until I hit college). Bottom line is, most of them got ground up like hamburger meat in a year or two. Was THAT fair to them- being set up to fail after flying so high? I still don't have a good answer for this.
Not really addressing this subject, what is this "whole person" crap. Hmmm...when I was in high school, I was too busy doing part-time work so that I could have enough money to go to college (and that was WITH some scholarship money). At that time, the "middle class" wasn't rich enough to send kids to college but not poor enough to get serious scholaship money. Going into debt was simply not done. So, would working to afford school ironically put you out of the running now? And, strangely, I just read a comment from some expert lamenting about how few high-schoolers can actually GET a job now - and how those students will pay for this later, because working while in school is a very powerful "invisible curriculum" that puts adults very noticeably ahead of their peers years later in earnings and position.
(So, if you think that this generation (now in their 20's) is basically worthless in the workplace, just wait five years or so.)

So, when in the future some of these ethnic minorities fail to get prompted and cite the evidence that ethnic minorities have not advanced through the ranks as well in %age terms as "white" canditates.
Is someone going to "remember" the skewed entrance requirments
Remember we have had the same here in N I for a goodly no of years
Especially and most recently with the Police service recruitment campaign
50/50 almost regardless of abilities, currently a lot of dross wearing the Uniform
Also incidently a shocking increase in the number of younger serving Police Officers being found guilty of criminal offenses.
Scheesh
What are your thoughts?
As an educator who has experienced this first hand, I tend to agree with Prof. Fleming.
But on the other hand the "whites" may need help soon:
“UC Berkeley, considered by many to be the best public university in the nation, and perhaps the world, is currently 41 percent Asian, a proportion that’s over three times higher than the percentage of Asian Americans in the California population, and almost 10 times higher than the percentage of Asians in the U.S. And Berkeley is just one example among many; along the bottom of the article runs a ticker-style strip recounting the Asian American percentage on top college campuses across the nation, from 13 percent at Princeton to 27 percent at Wellesley, 17 percent at University of Texas - Austin, and 27 percent at M.I.T.”
Just adding to the debate, however help is on the way for "white" students:

“The University of California’s recent eligibility reforms are breeding distrust for the institution among Asian-Americans, several scholars and community leaders said Friday…
UC has estimated that the changes will lead to a smaller percentage of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders in the pool of eligible applicants. White students stand to benefit most.”
May be we should change America’s higher educational system to be more like many other parts of the world. Only students get in that have the grades and pass the entrance examine. No cheap community colleges (where just about anyone can attend). Students in high school should be told that college is not for them and they should learn how to weld and/or take Walmart 101 Customer Greeter classes.
This should eliminate many government positions, therefore less taxes.

Are you crazy? I quit a world renown university to attend a community college because I had burnt my bridges with my $$ suppliers (aka parents). Never looked back! It allowed me to work full time and attend college which was near impossible at most universities.
Community colleges have a place and can be an excellent bridge to higher ed and they can serve as well rounded trade schools.
As to the grades requirement, I am all for it! One should attend based on merit and $$. That is why a community college as a start is a great option for most kids with good grades but minimal finance. If you're outstanding then you should be picked up by a university for a free ride as long as you keep a great GPA.
