So, these two neo-con botanists were on a field trip, searching for new species. All of a sudden, a huge grizzly bear crashes out of the brush and heads right for them. They scramble up the nearest tree, but the bear starts climbing up the tree after them. As the bear slowly works his way up the tree, the first botanist starts taking off his heavy leather hiking boots and pulls a pair of sleek running shoes from his fanny-pack. The second botanist gives him a puzzled look and says, "What in the world are you doing?"
The first botnst replies, "I figure when the bear gets close to us, we'll jump down and make a run for it."
The second botanist says, "Are you crazy? We both know you can't outrun a full-grown grizzly bear!"
The other botnst says, "My dear fellow, I don't have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun you!"
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
