No waterfowl/cranes/egrets and such? What do you feed squirrels?
A few folks in the area maintain bird feeders, but they attract mostly doves, rather than some of the more interesting natives. Ravens, quail, roadrunners, turkey vultures are common. Hawks are also common through much of the year, and I saw a bald eagle flying low overhead in early spring. My favorite locals are nighthawks, which are only here seasonally (spring/early summer). Even my pup stops and watches the nighthawks sometimes, they're so interesting and odd.
My mom has a similar problem to yours, all the spilled birdseed attracts families of pack rats in her yard, which she doubtless prefers to snakes.
