Let me guess, cul de sac in a designer McVillage on the outer beltway of the Denver Metroplex.

HOA, 1/5 acre, 4 designs repeated in 800 houses, exact same mailboxes. Have to drive EVERYWHERE.

The issue is not so much where we live but where we’ll work.

As noted in this and other threads the old paradigm is dead, the current crisis only accelerating the process. The aberration of Levittown must be corrected. Jobs must go to where people need and want to live.

I would have thought that 9/11 would have brought that lesson home fast and hard. But apparently thick headed people just can't leap to a new [rather old] paradigm.

Wall Street is a perfect example of a silo industry that no longer has any reason to be consolidated into one single geographic area. There is not a single reason for it. Yet, after 9/11 the number of banks and brokers that merely fortified their holdings rather than disperse them was amazing. If the majors had taken a long view and decentralized their HQ structure to cities throughout the country where the cost of living is less and commute stresses were less, the new financial sector would no longer be considered a prime target for terrorists as there would not be a single target. Any hit would not impact the industry. The "trading floor" would be electronic, as much of it is anyway.

It would be easier to keep top talent at the bigs without stupid large bonuses when the absolute best homes are in the $1M range [and that gets acreage] and country club membership is only $25K and commute is measured in sub 20 minute range. Quality of life is improved on every level.

Or none at all…

Telecommuting is grossly underutilized. A significant number of occupations can be done from home – for many more parts of the job requirements can be completed at home decreasing office/commute days to less than five per week.

Human nature seems to be part of the problem – we are indeed social animals and work for many is as much a social event as it is about earning a living.
