Charcoal vs. propane? The jury is in

Mesa man killed after barbeque explodes, sets him on fire

MESA, AZ -- Officials say a 63-year-old man died after an explosion caused by his barbeque set him on fire at his Mesa home late Wednesday afternoon.

According to Dave Montgomery with the Mesa Fire Department, Dave Koltonuk suffered third degree burns over 75 to 100 percent of his body.

Apparently, the explosion in the carport also set fire to the roof of the home, near Main Street and Val Vista Drive.

Dave Johnson with the Mesa Fire Department said Thursday that this was an extremely unusual accident.

He said the tank itself did not explode and the explosions did not happen while the man was lighting the grill.

After hearing the explosion, Koltonuk's neighbor Bill Stout did his best to try and save the man.

"He said Bill come and get me I need help, I need your help. I said I can't come in there Dave, there's too much smoke and flames I can't find you. You're gonna have to listen to my voice and try to come. Walk towards my voice," said Stout.

Thats when Stout says there was another explosion. Koltonuk came out of the carport in flames. He asked Koltonuk's wife for a blanket and used it to try and save the man.

"I saw him walking out and his body was on fire," Stout said. "Smoke and flames was coming to me and I held the blanket in front of me, part of it was on the ground and I told him I says drop and roll onto the blanket."

Stout said he stayed with Koltonuk who was awake and talking until paramedics arrived.

He was flown by helicopter to the Maricopa Medical Center burn unit in Phoenix where he died Wednesday night.

No, but it does here on Maui. Doesn't Mesquite grow in your parts?

Had I forgotten to mention that in my past diatribes? Plainly my oversight, I do apologize.

Spontaneous Human Combustion
Poof, there goes another one
A raging fire, a funeral pyre
An unexpected cremation

They were kissing in a crowded mall
when they burst right into flames.
Charcoal bricquets in thirty seconds
Their last words -- each other's names
Did they have a deep seated problem?
Was this their farewell?
Did they cause themselves to ignite
Leaving that awful smell?

Spontaneous Human Combustion
Poof, there goes another one
A raging fire, a funeral pyre
An unexpected cremation

She was walking on Rodeo Drive
She exploded with a flash
The police had no explanation
Their only clue -- a pile of ash
Did her Visa card reach its limit
on that shopping spree?
Did she blow her top when she read
"Buy one -- get one free"?

Spontaneous Human Combustion
Poof, there goes another one
A raging fire, a funeral pyre
An unexpected cremation

Is it passion, is it heartburn?
Is it the wrath of god?
Maybe it's friction in the bloodstream
starts a fire in your bod?
Is it caused by stress or frustration?
Or by what you eat?
Never snack on cabbage and wasabe,
you'll get smoking feet

Spontaneous Human Combustion
Poof, there goes another one
A raging fire, a funeral pyre
An unexpected cremation
