I suspect many S. Koreans would welcome the cost, provided the likes of Kim Jong-il are no longer among them.

I don't think it is an either/or proposition. I think both happened.

In what manner did Saddam "stand up" to the U.S.? I am wont to measure these things in terms of deeds rather than words...

Kim is paranoid beyond reckoning, and not without some cause. It may have been possible to deal with Kim at some point in the past, but breach of faith on all sides has worked toward no one's advantage. The more he is poked, the more aggressive his posture. The only thing to do is isolate him and ignore him to whatever extent that is possible.

I tend to agree with this assessment. Too bad some nosy reporters had to throw a monkey wrench into the mix....

I agree with you that most of it was posturing. I'm sure I could come up with minor transgressions and violations of UN resolutions and such. But posturing and insult is more than enough in the world of global politics. I'm sure there was a sense that the US had to teach that uppity Arab his place in some circles. It was mostly words, but those words caused embarassment for some, and he was able to build political capital in the Arab world as the little guy who was prepared to give the US the finger.

^ Hard to blame him, after being given tacit U.S. approval to invade Kuwait. FFS, how pissed would any of us be?

I said what? When? All I asked is that we consider the consequences before we act like cowboys. I see that idea was so discouraging for you that you presumed it meant we just give up.
