When I went looking for a house last year one of the very specific items I looked at was whether there was a HOA in place. If so, I didn't even look at the neighborhood. Not because I want to be a rowdy neighbor who does what he wants, but because I don't enjoy other folks deciding what is "right" about a neighborhood.
On this board alone we have had threads about HOAs stopping flag poles, HOAs making people remove their commercial trucks, HOAs making people change the color of their house, all fully legal within the covenants of the HOA agreement.
Sounds like seven bumper stickers might have been included in one of those covenants. Wonder if seven gay rights bumper stickers or seven pro choice bumper stickers would have got the Fox4 crew out there? I sort of doubt it.
But, as is normal for a Fox story, we only have one side of the story at this point. We don't know if everyone who has stickers also got a letter. And we don't know if there were other circumstances that precipitated this event. For all we know someone told the home owner that his lawn was a bit too high and he got irrational on them. They decided to use every covenant and rule to get him to STFU.
If it is in the rules, either get the rules changed or move. You lose those First Amendment rights when you sign a HOA. As Nutz 4 Benz so correctly put it:
