I personally would avoid any development with HOA and their associated restrictions. I know that I would be in trouble if I opened my 190E hood to find out what's ailing it. They will definitely fine me if the airbox was laying on the grass while the car is jacked up and the house music is thumping. What if my wife decided to sunbathe on the front lawn? I hear that HOA are worse than the Taliban
What a simple solution to all human conflicts !! Move.

If he signed a contract to live there, then I side with the HOA.

Then you agree that his public display of military pride qualifies as advertising? That is the crux of the argument as I understand it.

When I went looking for a house last year one of the very specific items I looked at was whether there was a HOA in place. If so, I didn't even look at the neighborhood. Not because I want to be a rowdy neighbor who does what he wants, but because I don't enjoy other folks deciding what is "right" about a neighborhood.

On this board alone we have had threads about HOAs stopping flag poles, HOAs making people remove their commercial trucks, HOAs making people change the color of their house, all fully legal within the covenants of the HOA agreement.

Sounds like seven bumper stickers might have been included in one of those covenants. Wonder if seven gay rights bumper stickers or seven pro choice bumper stickers would have got the Fox4 crew out there? I sort of doubt it.

But, as is normal for a Fox story, we only have one side of the story at this point. We don't know if everyone who has stickers also got a letter. And we don't know if there were other circumstances that precipitated this event. For all we know someone told the home owner that his lawn was a bit too high and he got irrational on them. They decided to use every covenant and rule to get him to STFU.

If it is in the rules, either get the rules changed or move. You lose those First Amendment rights when you sign a HOA. As Nutz 4 Benz so correctly put it:

It projects a point of view. That is the essence of advertising.

Most could argue that ONE or even TWO would be something that is an acknowledgment of service. My next door neighbor has a Army Star with Retired above it on his car. Once you get to seven of anything, that moves to a statement of opinion. Much like seven BUSHIT type stickers would be.
