As long at the conversation is on beliefs, some of the threads on BWOT have been the most open and impactful that I have seen on an open forum in years. We have, on this board everything from Charismatic Christian, Fundamental Christian, Southern Baptist, regular Protestant, Catholic, Church of England, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, Agnostic, Atheist and what was just called Atheist Zealot. The whole gambit.
As one would expect, there is a slight difference in opinion. I think that all sides have pretty much provided a hard justification for their belief, though no body would admit there have been any minds changed. I would bet, in the deep of night, however there are some thoughts that have broadened the ecclesiastical experience for everyone, including those of us who believe that when we die, we simply die.
I used to think of BWOT as laser tag. In some respects it still is. But I think more that it is a big club. Everyone has a big stuffy chair and is kicked back with their favorite beverage and popcorn or pie and everyone speaks there mind. When someone utters something stupid in the club, like most clubs, crap gets thrown at them. Don't want to get things thrown, don't say stupid stuff.
We don't moderate this place much. That is intentional and with the advice and comments of many of the members. A while back I asked some members to give me their thoughts on how this place runs, the comfort zone and what can be improved. Most replied. Overwhelmingly the answer was "it is good like it is".
If it was a lot tighter modded, many would leave. They come here to blow off steam or kick back and play. We all do. Since we don't solve the world's problems or get paid to be here, members always have a choice to take BWOT as it is or not. Very few actually leave and the group has grown pretty well. That growth happens because of the breadth of subject matter and diversity of discussion. We have minimal harrumphs and attaboys on this board.
I have, over the past few years modded another two sites, both bigger than this. If we modded BWOT like them, most would not be here, including me. It would be boring and it would be full of ~banned~ monikers. We do have rules and lines that can't be crossed. They are few but when someone hits one, they will know it.
Are we rowdy? YEPPERS. But we have a very good group of people that seem to come back day after day after day and want to play. And that is why we are here.
And as I tell all new members to BWOT...wear a cup.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
