The Rumsfeld Legacy

There is a great article in this month's GQ on Donald Rumsfeld's tenure as SecDef under GWB. It makes you wonder if tapping him for the job might be GWB's single greatest error during his presidency.

The Bush Presidency is unique in that it had multiple single greatest errors – it’s so hard to choose.

Let's clarify a few things, shall we:

Bush never "tapped" Rumsfeld for Secretary of Defense. It was all done by Cheney. Rumsfeld and Cheney were buddies during President's Ford tenure when Cheney served as his Chief of Staff, right after Rumsfeld.

Bush was basically a clueless and useless puppet who went to his ranch to cut brush while Cheney was busy filling selecting the new administration top posts after the 2000 (s)election.

It was no surprise that Cheney came out every time Rumsfeld screwed up and vehemently defended him. In the end, Rumsfeld, just like Gonzales, was sacrificed to appease those Congressional Democrats who were cruing for investigation of Rumsfeld's conduct of the Iraq war.
