Memorial Day

These heroes are dead. They died for liberty - they died for us. They are at rest. They sleep in the land they made free, under the flag they rendered stainless, under the solemn pines, the sad hemlocks, the tearful willows, and the embracing vines. They sleep beneath the shadows of the clouds, careless alike of sunshine or of storm, each in the windowless Place of Rest. Earth may run red with other wars - they are at peace. In the midst of battle, in the roar of conflict, they found the serenity of death. I have one sentiment for soldiers living and dead: cheers for the living; tears for the dead. ~Robert G. Ingersoll

Give a moment of silence for our dead, and a hand shake and salute for the living...

I'm not a real dickhead...but I acted like one in high school.

this is the Australian ode, repeated on our ANZAC day, but with respect;

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

to yours lost...

Today was a perfect day for the ceremonies. It was warm, humid and raining. You could tell, whether in a uniform or not who had enjoyed government paid vacation time in SE Asia as, some 40 years later rain still doesn't bother. You only get so wet.

Two of my remaining uncles, one a tanker at Anzio and the other a Marine at Korea went to visit my dad for a moment. The Signal Corp flags that I had cut on his stone had been decorated by a later generation of SigCorp soldier who had come by and noticed the flags.

We stopped by and talked to three of the widows from earlier Iraq and Afghanistan action [previous threads] who had brought their kids to the breakfast to meet their fathers' units for the first time.

I had mentored one kid from the time he was 14, with no father and helped him through those rough teen years. We went to all the recruiters when he graduated and he chose Marines. Stays six years, came out, went to College and then went back into the Army. Today I got to watch that 14 year old as Company CO and Army Major.

All in all a very good day. And I did eat too many pancakes...standing in the rain.

Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and that’s what I intend to reverse.

~ Senator Barack H. Obama
