I promise you S. Korea has plans independent of the U.S. as well.

North Korea actually faces four, problems ie Japan, China, South Korea and America so it is understandable that a country faced with these challenges will fight back and WMD is the only way for them. If they comply with any of the pre-conditions of the American/China deal then they loose and they know it.

Japan is still handcuffed by treaty, which will undoubtedly end soon, and send Kim into a tizzy as yet unseen. Also, Russia is no friend to N. Korea either.

Americans generally seem convinced that the ME and Israel is the #1 hot spot for aggression and a potential WWIII. The truth is that peace is just as tenuous in E. Asia, with far greater consequence and potential for expansion of regional conflicts. We have:

China-N. Korea
China-S. Korea
China-Taiwan
China-Japan
China-Russia
China-U.S.
N. Korea-S. Korea
N. Korea-U.S.
N. Korea-Japan
N. Korea-Russia
S. Korea-Japan
India-Pakistan

The most seething regional hatreds are:

N. Korea-Japan
S. Korea-Japan
China-Japan
India-Pakistan

Any conflict involving Japan has enormous WWIII potential.

According to your guesswork, we're only listed on there once. Whew....I know we can take North Korea in a fight.

The rest can take care of themselves.

Erm, you might want to look again. And in fact, it is not our region at all, which is why I only listed the U.S. twice. The only thing arguing against our complete extraction from the area is the potential for Japanese-Korean aggression, which may ensue.

The unification of Korea has to be the ultimate prize for any self serving dictator, the main deterrent is the threat of going Saddam. That threat is no longer credible thanks to the lefties.

Good luck.

... and this important discussion continues.
