Fear, intolerance, loathing, hipocrisy?

I stumbled across this and was kind of caught up in the tale.

Apparently some panel or reviewer or something had concluded that there was no genetic basis for people being gay and he was saying how right that was, it would prove how wrong all those gay marriage people were, gay was just an attitude, you’ve heard that stuff before I’m sure. So finally I couldn’t take it any longer. I finally looked at him and said dad, that hurts to hear you talk that way and the reason it hurts is I’m gay. He looked back at me and – somehow this hurt even more – started to laugh. I mean really laugh, not just a chuckle. Then he looked at me and said, you're kidding, right? Just yanking my chain? Then he chuckled and said let’s get some dinner. So I stopped him and told him, no I’m not joking around. I’m really gay. It’s who I am, I’ve never been able to tell you before but what you were saying really hurt and I have to tell you. At least he stopped laughing. But then he started saying how it was wrong, how I should know it’s wrong, that what I “think” I believe and feel is hogwash, that all the gays are full of it, gay marriage is a joke. When he stopped and took a breath I looked at mom and she was like pale. I was too no doubt, I couldn’t believe he was that way. I thought mom was going to help me out but no I think she was pale I guess from shock. She started in on me, too, called me some names, asked how I could be so dumb and gullible, how I could do this to her, what will others think and I’m like hey it’s my life, I have to be who I am and dad’s like that is a crock of ****, you're just brainwashed, dumb kid, you know, that kind of stuff, said we’ll get you some help, that’s not right and mom was nodding with him and wow, I really couldn’t believe it. I told them I had to be somewhere you know and got out of the house then just went to my friends and he wasn’t home so I ended up just sleeping in his carport til he came home it was really bad. I can’t go back home, what can I say to them? What should I do?

Most of the responses to this drama were supportive, some mentioning that his folks didn’t understand, that people fear what they don’t understand, that his folks are bigots, they’re intolerant, they’re hypocrites, etc.

Whatever one's beliefs, I didn’t understand how someone could be that cold to their kid, even if adopted. What do the rest of you think?

I was a kid that age once. I was impressionable, excitable, knew it all and my parents and I disagreed on a variety of subjects. It all worked out

I think that somewhere, if we search the BWOT archives we have seen Anonymous' father's side of the story.

Narrow minded bigotry, whether toward their own kids or toward adopted kids is going to be somewhat the same. If folks can't get their arms around something, they just can't.

As long as Jesus and Leviticus are calling the shots, there is little hope for either compassion or salvation.

Sexuality is polygenic and mediated by environment. It is most definitely NOT an on/off switch like Mendel's wrinkled vs smooth peas. Instead, it is a continuum varying from Venus-like femininity to Ares-like masculinity. The extremes are caricatures of sexuality. Between them are where we exist.

Even more confusing, research indicates that orientation often changes over time. What we felt and believed in our youth is different from middle-age, is different from our sunset years.

Human sexuality is far, far richer than what we bargained for when we agreed to accept life -- what, you didn't agree to this?

Too damned bad.

Deal with it as it is, not as you wish it might be.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thats what I intend to reverse.

Are the Mendel's peas steamed and placed neatly on top of the mountain of pale white mashed potatoes, like bright green lava erupting from a Mount Spudsuvious or are they cast aside, unattended, rolling around interfering with the baby carrots or the shoots of greens as they try to find their own identity on the plate, tossed aside from their normal, traditional partner?

Oh, good, Botnst, your "coming out". I can hardly wait for the wedding. Do you pitch or catch?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

I found it ironic that had the kid (I'm assuming s/he is a kid) "come out" on BWOT, s/he would have been welcomed and accepted, and if the kid's parents had signed up and said those things in the forum, they'd have ended up banned. At least s/he could avoid them here.

They wouldn't have ended up banned, many on this board have said much worse about gays and are still around.

But they would get the normal amount of crap from everyone when they posted up bigoted comments.
