I can't believe this is the first he's looking at the fuel pump though. I had to replace one of those on an '88 Trans-Am, and when it finally shit the bed, it acted almost exactly like the problems Drew's been describing.

Yep, relatively new pump!
I am living a nightmare with this car, maybe I will take Shane's offer after all.

Drew,

My son is in the middle of converting his 1985 190E 2.3-16 (Euro version) from the Bosch CIS system to a VEMS sequential injection system. The VEMS system has an input port in the wiring harness for a fuel pressure sensor. While investigating the CIS system he discovered there is no pressure feed back to shut the pump off, it runs on a duty cycle of some predetermined timing, depending on throttle position and engine speed, apparently. This means if your check valve is not functioning correctly, or your filter is munged up, you may not always have the intended fuel pressure at that distributor device.

Just a thought.

Jim

EDIT: Another thought. Seeing you are missing your Butter Jesus and copper gutters, is there a chance they are in your gas tank? I had some asshole in Alaska put an 8-track tape in my VW Bus gas tank, and it took me a long time with really erratic operation to finally notice that when I took the carb off every night to disassemble and clean it, and get it ready to reinstall the next morning, there was something shiny in the little pipe nipple that the fuel hose attached to. I picked it out of there with a paper clip and then pulled about 300 feet of 8-track tape out. The spool may or may not have been in the tank, but once I got the tape out the problem was solved.

I used to have a "spare" in the shed but couldn't find it. But, yes, it has a spring and a ball. The pressure pushes the ball off the seat against the spring and when the pump shuts off the spring and stored pressure in the accumulator push the ball back against the seat. The ball is not loose, or shouldn't be, so shaking it should not make a rattling noise. I also believe the size of the fittings on each end are different so you can't actually put it in backwards.

I have a spare one but it's hallow. The other one came with the fuel pump already attached so I didn't take it out to check while installing the pump.

I'm not ignoring your plight Drew, it is just that it could be so many things, that I don't want to lead you off on several wild goose chases. Hopefully it is the fuel pump, but somehow I doubt it.
