I can have an XP license available as needed and not have a memory hungry OS on the drive all for free.

XP licenses aren't transferrable from one PC to another, strictly speaking.

That said, if you're hell bent on running Linux, any one of a number of distributions running Samba should do what you're looking for without issue.
