We have approximately 80-acres in the Midwest near a reservoir. There is one home on about an acre and a half that I grew up on, then we bought the rest more recently and it included a 1900-era farmhouse which we renovated and enlarged to be the new main house. My sister was gifted a 5-acre parcel and we put a house on that land. The remainder is a mix of woods and fields; we rented the fields to a farmer but he retired last year so now we have begun the process of leasing the land to an energy company to survey for good ol' American sourced oil/natural gas and will benefit if any is found, but to counter this we are also in the process of establishing the wooded area as a nature reserve. I guess it's our version of planting a tree for every one you cut down.
We have many berry bushes and a large garden but they are all for family use only as we don't sell the harvest and we also enjoy a great amount of outdoor activities such as go-karting, paint ball, bon fires, family gatherings, target shooting, creating a Haunted Trail each Halloween for the young ones, etc. It's like a vacation every day when you can walk out the back door and immerse yourself in the chosen adventure of the day. Land is extremely liberating and truly the best feeling of freedom you can have. Whatever your choice, enjoy it and make time for your family, friends and relatives to enjoy it with you.
