VW launches TDI Truth & Dare with coffee filter test

Americans typically have a poor opinion of diesel engines, and for good reason – yesterday's oil-burners were noisy, smelly and generally unrefined. Today, none of those traits would accurately describe the modern diesel engines from any number of European automakers, including Volkswagen. To help spread the word that new diesels can't be compared with their predecessors, VW has launched a new "unedited consumer blog forum called TDI Truth & Dare."

The new social site is separated into two parts. The first is labeled "Truth" and is a place where Volkswagen will spread information on its modern TDI engines and the car's they are installed in. The other section is called – you guessed it – "Dare," a place where VW will announce contests and challenges for drivers of TDI-equipped vehicles.

The first video posting on the new site attempts to show the difference between old diesel engines and modern "clean diesels" like the current Jetta TDI using a coffee filter. Interested?

I wonder why they didn't use a Rabbit Diesel for the old Diesel? Surely not because they thought it would not be sooty enough to make the TDI look good.

Having owned both a W115 diesel and several Rabbit diesels, I'd definitely say that the older MBs were sootier. I suspect it was due to their all cast iron longblocks, vs VW's aluminum heads, which reached operating temps a tad earlier. Of course the MB engines could be made to run to 500K plus miles, while the VWs typically only made it to 400k.

When MB began producing the OM60x series engines, with aluminum heads and more advanced injection management and cats, the soot content dropped considerably. The original tdi completely revolutionized passenger diesels, and MB's current engines are also phenomenal...but I wish they'd go back to the inline configuration. I hate vee engines

How is your TDI? I am looking into getting a new diesel SUV, currently only ML bluetec is available not much selection yet in California.

I love it, the power is great for a V6 and the smoothness of the ride with the air suspension is great, it truly rides just as smooth as my 06 E280.

Here is a decent writeup from someone who has driven the V6 TDI over the last 2 weeks, the guy has been driving an earlier model VW V10 TDI: V6TDI experience - Club Touareg Forums

As for the Club Touareg forum, it has to be the most informative I have found to date.
