Unfortunately, most Americans are not good or disciplined drivers. Many do not pay attention to their driving, drive under influence of all kinds of medications, eat, drink, talk on cell phones, and text messages while driving, etc. Increasing the speed limits would only encourage these types to drive even faster and more carelessly and create even more potential for accidents.
And most American drivers are not even aware that the left lane on interstate highways is not a cruising lane, especially when you go at or below the speed limit. And the same goes for the large semi truck drivers who are among the most inconsiderate drivers I have ever seen.
Just the other day a woman who plowed at high speed into a number of vehicles stopped at a red light, and killed one person and wounded several others, was sentenced to six years in prison because she was paying her bills on her cell phone (=texting) while driving in heavy traffic!!!!!!!!
And recently I was passed on I95 here in Florida by a Hummer2 doing at least 90 MPH. Both front seat occupants had aftermarket DVD players mounted on the sun visors and each was watching a movie!!!!!! I could see it very clearly as it was at night. You want even higher speed limit for jerks like that?
