Unfortunately, most Americans are not good or disciplined drivers. Many do not pay attention to their driving, drive under influence of all kinds of medications, eat, drink, talk on cell phones, and text messages while driving, etc. Increasing the speed limits would only encourage these types to drive even faster and more carelessly and create even more potential for accidents.

And most American drivers are not even aware that the left lane on interstate highways is not a cruising lane, especially when you go at or below the speed limit. And the same goes for the large semi truck drivers who are among the most inconsiderate drivers I have ever seen.

Just the other day a woman who plowed at high speed into a number of vehicles stopped at a red light, and killed one person and wounded several others, was sentenced to six years in prison because she was paying her bills on her cell phone (=texting) while driving in heavy traffic!!!!!!!!

And recently I was passed on I95 here in Florida by a Hummer2 doing at least 90 MPH. Both front seat occupants had aftermarket DVD players mounted on the sun visors and each was watching a movie!!!!!! I could see it very clearly as it was at night. You want even higher speed limit for jerks like that?

Shane,
Just hold your tears. The grannies probably were in a hurry looking for a bath room and didn't want to soil the new interior of their Camry.

It comes down to increased driving restrictions and not the speed limits being kept minimal.
Inattentive drivers need severely ticketed.
Germany has restrictions (as I recall) on their plates. Restrictions for night driving, autobahn running, and so on. It thins out the bad drivers.
There are some real idiots on the phones as well. Many times they appear drunk, until you see the phone in their ear. So many cannot drive and chew gum at the same time, and yet think they can. Let's get restrictive, and we would feel better about increasing the speed limits. Instead we pull cops off the roads in favor of red light and speed cameras, so we never will know the condition of the drivers doing the offenses.

Hey Shane, the following post just came across one of my listservs:

"85 Audi GT coupe quattro turbo for sale. This is original factory car with only 6,000 miles on it. I need not say more, it is better than brand new. Stored in climate controlled garage. Comes with spare set of rims and two sets of factory recommended tires, and complete set of decals. Yes I do have some pics but will have to post them later. To get rid of any tire kickers yes the price will be in the 50k range. I know one sold several years ago with 40k on it for 42k."

That's an effn rare car, dude--classic

Problem is it sounds like it is all ate up by the seller. Probably a dealer in hiding trying to cash out. Probably knows nothing sells better than an odometer. Anyone checked out the fake odo's on E Bay lately? It is getting quite blatant.

I do not know about other states, but here in Florida cars that are 20 years old and older are "mileage exempt". This means that the seller does not have to certify the mileage on the vehicle title at the time of sale, and "mileage exempt" is entered on the title instead.
This presents a serious problem for buyers of older vehicles. One can get a low mileage speedometer for an older Mercedes in a junkyard and replace the existing one with it, thus deceiving the customer, who will often willingly pay a lot more for a nice car with really low mileage. And the "mileage exempt" law gets the seller legally off the hook even if there is a suspicion that the speedometer was tampered with or replaced.

Carfax reports can verify the mileage to some extent in states that have mandatory annual inspection on vehicles. In Florida, no such inspections are mandated, so determining the true mileage of any car here in Florida that is older than 20 years is a guess at best.
